About Me

I’m from the city of Birmingham in the UK.
I’ve always liked film, but only since 2007 have I really taken a profound interest in the medium as an art. Since 2007 because this is when I decided to take Film as a 4th subject at my 6th form college intending to drop it in the second year. But soon I found out that this was a subject i cloud really relate to and one that grabbed my attention. I’m off to The University of Nottingham at the end of 2009 to take a degree in Film and television studies.
My taste in terms of film is very diverse and i wouldn’t say i attached myself to any particular movement. I like the absurb nature and hilarity of Werner Herzog, the emotional poetry of Ang Lee, the haunting realism of Bela Tarr, the profundity yet playfulness of Akira Kurosawa, the aesthetic grandeur of Zhang Yimou and the Dark humour and ultra-realism/surrealism of Park Chan-wook.
I’m also a fan of films which wouldn’t really feature on this sight;( team America, the note book, the last samurai) all of which people have dismissed or not taken seriously as films, yet i get something out of them which is of course the most important thing.

I’m also very big into photography and I have my collection at this link – http://mattick.deviantart.com/gallery/

I'm curious whether you, coming from Birmingham, have read Jonathan Coe's novel set there: "The Rotters' Club." If so, I'd be interested to know your thoughts about it.

Thank you for your open mind and your kind words. It got rough on my Arrogance thread. I began to wonder if I could continue to post threads, and then you and Adam Cook wrote to me. I stepped out of my normal movie watching and saw Pickup On South Street by Fuller a few nights ago off of a recommendation. I enjoyed the film, but it is harder for me to watch a pioneering film of the past these days as much as I respect them. It is kind of like only listening to music on records because that was when rock and roll was shaped into what it is today. I respect that fact but now there are mp3 players that sound waaaay better. Some films are just so dated it hurts to watch them. But I do know that what they were for the day and time they were made, they WERE groundbreaking films. As far as the whole foreign film thing, America as a culture has probably the most boring films in the world compared to other countries like Japan or France. But over in France they are obsessed with American films the same way we are about French films. Every culture finds other countries to be more exciting than their own. Familiarity breeds contempt.

I think as a milestone in the history of cinema this is a very important film.
