Any remakes that you prefer to their originals and if so why? about 3 years ago

as much as I love Wages of Fear, I LOVE Sorcerer, so underrated. The first time I watched it, I immediately rewatched it after it was over. The music gets me every time. How come I can download the soundtrack & put it on my ipod to listen to while I drive, but I can’t purchase a WIDESCREEN dvd of Sorcerer? it just doesn’t seem right, someone needs to get on this.

How Do You Organize Your DVDs? almost 3 years ago

I have all my movies alphabetically in sections like a video store, I even made signs for a visual reminder. I have Comedy, Drama, Thriller, Horror, Sci-fi, Action-Adventure, Classics, Western, Crime, Comic Book (movie based on comic books), Documentary, Foreign-French, Foreign-Asian, Foreign-Italian, Foreign-German… (you get the idea).

But I do make it a point to have a whole shelf devoted to favorite directors (with signs to match: Woody Allen (I think I have 30 of his movies), Robert Altman (only 17 of his), Coen Bros (all 13, waiting on A Serious Man), Francis Ford Coppola (13, even Dementia 13), David Cronenberg (15, I even have that special edition Fast Company for the Shorts), Kinji Fukusaku ( I think 12 or 13), Alfred Hitchcock (I think 24 including a season of Alfred Hitchcock presents), Wong Kar-Wai (10, and have three copies of Chungking Express including the new Bluray) Stanley Kubrick (all of ‘em! some multiple copies including new Blurays), Akira Kurosawa (he’s why I got into Criterions when I bought my first criterion: Yojimbo. 23 total), David Lynch (10, even his short films), Michael Mann (all except Public Enemies and The Keep, which i’m not sure is even on dvd), Sam Peckinpah (11), Roman Polanski (14 including the new Repulsion Blu & not counting Rush Hour 3), Martin Scorsese (26. I have three copies of Goodfellas, Casino, Raging Bull and 2 Taxi Drivers), Steven Soderbergh (17, including some I made from vhs copies of Kafka & King of the Hill since they aren’t on dvd yet), Quentin Tarantino (7 including Four Rooms). There are other directors I like, but at the time I felt their filmography’s weren’t large enough or strong enough. I know pretty soon I’ll have to add a few more to the Auteur Wall.

Best or Favorite Opening Sequence almost 3 years ago

a lot of great ones mentioned here, but I would like to call attention to the opening of Spike Lee’s He Got Game. Cinematographer Malik Sayeed’s images of people all over America shooting hoops over that Aaron Copland music (“John Henry”) leave an indelible imprint on my mind forever. So much so that when I use to have the vhs, I would watch just the opening over & over again. It was almost as if the music enhanced the images & the images complimented the music. It was one to remember.

How Do You Organize Your DVDs? almost 3 years ago

yeah it’s gotten a little out of control and it took me months just to get the organization right, which can be a job in itself. but it’s better than my old system, which was writing every movie I owned on an index card & writing where I had it last or if a friend borrowed it, like checkin out a book at the library. It got to be too hard to keep up with the damn cards! Too much work, too much hassle! but it was before i had a computer.

The Auteurs' Fake Criterion Covers almost 3 years ago

I love that Paths of Glory, Scott. I wish I had that & your Point Blank in my collection now!

I also choose that 3rd Light Sleeper there, RYY. I think the hazy neon glow is a stroke of genius.

What Does Your Family Think Of Your Love of Cinema? almost 3 years ago

I’m pretty sure they think of it as a waste of time, but I guess they just don’t understand that this the only thing I’ve ever really been passionate about. I can feign interest & hold a conversation in just about anything. but when I’m talking about movies, that’s when I come alive like Julio in Spanish class. Other stuff just doesn’t interest me as much.

What Does Your Family Think Of Your Love of Cinema? almost 3 years ago

it’s all about knowing your audience. I find that when I’m getting to know someone I usually ask that their favorite movie or what kind of movies they like. Actors or actresses? just so I can gauge what they like or who they like. Then I usually just talk about those. People like talking about the movies THEY like & I’m just happy talking about film in general. Plus knowing a person’s movie preferences usually tells me so much more about a person than their damn shoes.

I understand about explaining, one of my pet peeves is having to over-convince a person to watch a movie. People should just be open to what a movie can deliver or just watch the same damn movies the rest of their lives. I usually try to convince anyway because I think a person will like it, but sometimes I just give up & let the back-of-the-dvd writers do their job.

how much do you think your dvd collection worth/cost? almost 3 years ago

just send them the movies, I’m sure they’ll get much more satisfaction out of WATCHING people eat in good movies than the actual food. that is, assuming you have good movies.

Film watching habits almost 3 years ago

usually late at night or early in the mornings are ideal for me, but I don’t make it a rule or nothing. pretty much anytime right before i go out into the world to do something. don’t usually eat, but hey sometimes it happens.

^^that’s funny. but NEVER put a movie in the wrong case. Take Larry David’s advice & leave the dvd case on top of the dvd player, that way it never gets lost & the wrong movie never ends up in the wrong case.

Robert Altman virgin, looking for recommendations almost 3 years ago

I love 3 women, but it’s a challenging film, def. not one to start out with. I would say start with The Player because that’s one of his more playful ones, but still has all the altmanesque qualities(overlapping dialogue, moving cameras, air of mystery). plus, it’s funny satire of the movie industry at the time which is particularly funny if you’re a fan of movies. From there you can move onto Short Cuts, which is simliar in tone & has a lot of the same cast. My personal fave is The Long Goodbye though.

When you get drunk, leave your dvds alone! don’t take your drunk aggression out on them, what did they ever do to you but offer hours upon hours of entertainment. Don’t get wasted & decide THAT’s the time to rearrange your movies chronologically. You sir, need help.

don’t feel bad, just think about how much we ourselves pay for overpriced food that could go towards feeding children in Africa, I mean 87 cents a day? even a fast food meal is around $5 or $6.It’s both ironic AND disgusting. But it’s alright, I understand Bono’s working on something to take care of this…

just how good is this godard fellow anyway? almost 3 years ago

I think it was Francis Ford Coppola who said that Kurosawa Films fall into only two categories: the great ones, or the really really really good ones. I happen to agree since his films are what got me into the Criterions.

Criterion's lame blu-ray debut almost 3 years ago

I’ve only upgraded with Repulsion, Chungking Express, & Bottle Rocket Blus. & that was only because those were personal favorites. While I do admit they do look significantly better than their dvd counterparts, I will probably be more selective on what I make the jump with (no blind buys), & what I feel will be beneficial in higher resolution. I’m perfectly happy owning a DECENT copy of a film, not necessarily the definitive version…unless it’s a film I love.

not in any type of order, but only these stand out in my head.

Inglorious Basterds (I have no idea if that’s the right spelling), District 9, Julia, Watchmen, Moon, Alexander the Last, 500 Days of Summer, Adventureland, Up, Public Enemies & Duplicity.

Top 5 De Palma's almost 3 years ago

Alot of people trash De Palma, but his movies are the ones I remember most growing up because they were so thrilling & polarizing. He was my Hitchcock before I knew anything about Hitchcock. I still think his movies pay homage more than rip off. Granted, not all of his movies have been great ( I was severely disappointed by The Black Dahlia) but no matter what, when I hear there’s a new De Palma film coming out, the little boy who used to stay up late by himself to watch his movies gets excited.

1. Blow Out
2. Scarface
3. Carrie
4. Body Double
5. Dressed to Kill

Honorable Mentions to Sisters, Casualties of War, Carlito’s Way, & Femme Fatale (that opening heist is just Heaven to me)

Steven Soderbergh's best film. almost 3 years ago

for me, it’s a tie between Out of Sight & The Limey. Soderbergh has a love for 70’s movies & both of these movies feel like throwbacks to that era.

Honorable Mentions to Traffic, King of the Hill, & Solaris. & I think the FIRST Ocean’s Eleven is a lot of fun.

I really like his commentaries, even ones from movies he DIDN’T direct like Point Blank, Catch-22, & The Third Man. He’s a movie lover at heart & you can see it in his movies like Tarantino but just not as overt.

I loved Adaptation…and her in it. is that too recent & underrated to be her masterpiece? But since she’s the Supporting Actress, i guess it doesn’t qualify.

This is a two-parter. In Almost Famous, William’s sister Anita (Zooey Deschanel) leaves him a bag of records when she goes to become a stewardess. After The Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds (I’ll give you that one), which albums get their own insert shot? (there are 7, & pretty popular for the era…I think) & which one does Willam eventually put on?
