If you could have lunch with one filmmaker, alive or dead, who would it be? about 3 years ago

Bela Tarr. Except we’d only talk about Tarkovsky, what else is there to say?

2 OR 3 THINGS I KNOW ABOUT HER about 3 years ago

I’m so excited for this one! I’ve only seen a VHS copy from my school library, but it is one of my favorites by Godard. His constant theme of intellectual inquiry really comes full bloom in this one.

good place to start about 3 years ago

With filmmakers as prolific and wondrous as Bergman, I agree that it’s hard to go wrong no matter where you start.

I’d advise you to start with Wild Strawberries and once you make your way to Cries and Whispers you’ll have a new favorite director. Hopefully.

NYU about 3 years ago

I’ll actually be attending NYU beginning this summer as a transfer student. Though I’ve heard what Glemaud is saying many times before, NYU will offer you a well-rounded education (unlike many other film schools) that will help the quality of your films. Anyone can learn how to make a film, but if you have nothing to say, well….what’s the point.

If you want admissions specifics, feel free to send me a private message.

Those final scenes give me goosebumps each time I watch the film. I wish it was required for every citizen to see this film.

NYU about 3 years ago

Right, I meant that a school like NYU can inspire the intellectually curious to dig a little deeper into themselves. But yes, if you’re not willing then no school will make you a great filmmaker. I attended a school for the past two years that put no stress on general education. It was purely teaching the craft without inspiration for worthwhile content. Because of this, many of students lacked motivation and the majority of their films fell flat. If you’re going to take the time to go to film school, why not strive for the best? Without serious students, collaboration is a nightmare.

Films that made you physically ill after watching about 3 years ago

A few weeks ago I saw Michael Haneke’s 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance. While I thought it was an excellent film, I felt quite ill after the credits finished rolling. The banality and lack of purpose in their lives was so blunt and powerful that my stomach nearly exploded.

Has anyone had similar experiences? I’m thinking more about content rather than vomit-inducing imagery.

Alanedit, care to embellish more on the general style of films coming out of NYU?

Most depressing film you have ever seen? about 3 years ago

Autumn Sonata never ceases to bum me out for a few days. And yeah, I agree that nearly all of Fassbinder’s films are quite depressing given his absurdly banal and down-right negative outlook on the world. I also found Satantango to be extremely depressing in the end.

It’s interesting though, these are some of my favorite films. I guess that says a lot about me.

I have a new favorite film. about 3 years ago

What a fantastic film. I have a copy of Damnation sitting on my desk that I plan on watching in a few days. I always find it so interesting that a director so visually stunning and intellectually articulate could be so uninterested in cinema. He’s said that he only really enjoys the works of Tarkovsky and Bergman. Though I suppose those are not bad directors to admire.

@Marq, I always try to free from myself from any expectations before watching a film. I rarely like to read about a film before viewing.

Yes! I’ve only seen a VHS rip of the film and I’m dying to see what Criterion could do with it.

I owe my entire film education to the public library. I began checking films out 10-15 at a time since I was 16 years old and haven’t stopped yet.

I saw Jeanne Dielman in the theatre a month ago here in Chicago. I don’t know how I feel about seeing it on DVD…

Either way, I’m glad it’s finally getting released.

Currently, my favorite Godard’s are La Chinoise and 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her.

Least favorite would have to be Alphaville.

I feel like relating the Algerian revolution to what’s going on in Israel is much more just than the Iraq situation.
