The Emperor's New Groove

The body language of each character are not only brilliantly realized by the animators, but are perfectly matched to each voice actor's style. Inspired performances by Spade, Goodman, Kitt, and show-stealer Patrick Warburton as Kronk, remind us that Disney voice-casting should be more than just employing hot commodities. The story arc limitations of the "Disney formula" are recognizable- and promptly transcended.

I suppose its for a variety of reasons. First I feel that visually, the Coens can do no wrong. The way they shot True Grit reminded me of the way Ford, Hawks and Mann shot their old westerns. It felt like a classic american western. I loved all the performances, especially the girl who brought so much life to an extremely complicated role. I really loved the way they told the story, especially in comparison with the Wayne version which got the story all wrong. Part of what makes the story of "True Grit" so unusual is the fact that a classic American genre, the Western, is being told from the perspective of a 14 year old girl, so the casting of a 21 year old girl and the placing of Rooster as the main character totally baffled me. Also I felt the films themes and comments on the role of fatherhood to be very moving (the fact that True Grit isn't found in men who are though but in men who risk their lives to save the life of a young girl). I was totally taken aback when the movie that made me laugh the whole way through, could suddenly change its course and make me cry at the very end. In all honesty, True Grit, Black Swan and Biutiful (which also had some amazing stuff about fatherhood) were all very close for me but when it comes down to it, the Coens simply can't be beat in my eyes.
