What's the most annoying film music you've had to endure? about 3 years ago

TWBB’s score is one of those ones that, more than anything, are made FOR the film at hand. You may not like it, but you can’t deny the perfect pairing it creates between picture and sound. Its unconventionality is a major factor in its draw, but some people might consider that a setback. Who cares. Its one of my favorites.

What films have you walked out on and why ? about 3 years ago

Only 2:

Saving Silverman- My parents thought it too inappropriate for the ‘family outing’ we made it to be, especially for my age, 10 or 11 at the time. Lame.

Gran Torino- However the amount of acclaim this received, I found almost the entire cast to be wooden or amateurish in their acting. Sitting through the whole thing would’ve bothered me even more.

@Joe,
I like that you have Ruth Gordon in Rosemary’s Baby there. I love the build of her emotions from subtle to overwhelming.

The Watchmen was a little disappointing to say the least.
And I find Star Wars got worse in its music as it went on (and most would agree the same thing happened with the wquality of the movies)- but John Williams really nailed Schindler’s List!
I find approval with the TWBB score because I took a step back and saw the chaos that both the movie and its soundtrack communicated- the fact that the music didn’t quite fit in made it seem, to me, that it fit even better. That, in a movie like that, things aren’t supposed to lock into place because its like listening and seeing a nightmare happen, where everything is dark, mysterious, brooding with evil- but mostly, everything is a little off. I listen to the soundtrack alone and feel this.
That said, I can understand if someone doesn’t like it. Its polarizing, musically.

What sets Stanley apart from the others? about 3 years ago

Attention to detail so intense, that he would NEVER settle for anything. Eyes Wide Shut had a 700+ day shoot!
-Insistence on the use of natural lighting, or at least light that didn’t look artificial.
-Ability to display ideas in a (very) objective way.
-Preference to work in as many territories and areas of a film as possible, not just as a director (writer, producer, editor, cinematographer, etc.)
-Ability to always get the shot or idea that he wanted, no matter how long it took.
-Never reluctant to modify source material for an adapted screenplay, at any level. All that it meant was that he was getting a better movie out of it.
-Uses every artistic weapon in his arsenal to tell and develop a story. Dialogue was merely one of them.
-Never pampered the actors working with him, no matter how ‘big’ they were (i.e. The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut)
-Isn’t afraid to ask questions without a clear answer
because the question IS more important than the answer.
-Often presents a throng of ideas both overt and subtle, hinting an almost overwhelming number of possible themes.

Favourite snippet (some quirky little thing a character does) about 3 years ago

Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood: When searching, curious, he slides his index finger and middle finger forward and backward very quickly, with only one finger in front of the other at a time, almost shuffling.

Min-Sik Choi in Oldboy: Little gestures and doings that resemble a canine, or at least a beast. Note his encounter with the man with him on the roof, the way he interacts with women after he is out, his eating of foods (such as dumplings or, famously, squid). He becomes an instinctive creature.

Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski: Realistically slow speed of dialogue for the lazy stoner he is, and very amusing. Dependence on expletives and simple points in conversation. Not stupid, of course.

Tatsuya Nakadai in Sword of Doom: The way he battles in sword combat- completely motionless and reactionary to his opponent, but with a slightly crazed expression on his face that says “I’m going to kill you, and I’m going to enjoy it. If you die its because of your own choice to approach me”

Peter O’Toole in Lawrence of Arabia: The look in his eyes after the caravan raid, staring at the sand, hanging on his arm holding a bloody knife. Jesus.

Ok, last one for now:

Alain Delon in Le Samourai: His COMPLETE control of character. Every move, gesture, word is precisely calculated. He never lets an emotion or temptation damage his focus or safety.

Definitely when hes goes all out.
Formalism has its place, but a lot of the truly great films are made with risks in mind. Because if you’re taking a risk (especially in the case of Anderson), then you’re trying for something difficult and excellent.
I find that if its almost impossible to define what a film is about in only one sentence, greatness is around the corner.

I can’t help it, BUT I FUCKING LOVE LISTS!

Oh, bass lines…Justin Chancellor always comes up with something fresh and exciting. I love the bass in Baying of the Hounds by Opeth, and for that matter their entire album Damnation. DAZED AND CONFUSED! I Know Somethin (Bout You) by Alice in Chains.
