I don’t know if anyone has mentioned Nick Nolte’s performance in “Affliction”… best of his career, let alone best acting I had ever seen at that point by any actor. But he lost to Roberto Benigni in “Life Is Beautiful.” That is the year when I first learned that people can get robbed for the wrong reasons. I was shocked – so certain I was that it would go to Nolte.
Actually, might have been the year before that when I learned about the robberies – when Nicholson won for “As Good As It Gets” over Duvall in “The Apostle”. Duvall should have won, but I heard that you can’t win over Nicholson because of his influence – whatever that means…! So the next year I was doubly disappointed when Nolte lost… but not sure why Benigni was slated to win that one.
I thought “Slumdog” was overrated last year, as well. Good to see I’m not the only one. I actually preferred “Frost/Nixon” for best picture on every level, and flew pretty solo on that one.
