"The Boy Friend" will always be my favorite Russell film, in fact, it's one of my all time favorite films. It has an extraordinary level of genius that's always been overlooked and misunderstood. You have to look at what's actually going on in this creation, there are so many layers to it, unlike any film I've seen. It's a mind trip – a good one.
Haven't been here for a while... I see a photo has been added! Nice one :)
This one could use a nice cover photo :)
Ross also directed 'the Last of Sheila' which is awesome, and other noteworthy films, such as 'Goodbye Mr. Chips', 'Play It Again Sam', 'Protocol', 'The Secret of My Success', etc. Most are silly but fun... and there are several good dramas, too.
'Shampoo' should really be listed - great, entertaining film in every capacity.
How is "Blow Out" missing here? In my opinion, one DePalma's (if not THE) best effort. Very entertaining.
That's a bit of blasphemy in my book, so I'll share this self-indulgent tidbit: a 60's-inspired spy thriller screenplay of mine was compared to 'Charade' by someone at CAA& that wasn't even my intention. What a compliment, love this film :-)
If I had to pick only one film - that I've watched countless times and that I would carry with me to the end - as my favorite film of all, it would be "Two For The Road". Sometimes we can't explain why a film resonates with us in some ways more than others... I just love this one.
I must have the patience for it... When I watch this film (and it is one of my favorites to watch) it's a sort of vacation from the world. And it is one of the best to capture the mood of the 1960's I crave. The pace, the existential humor - it's a small bit of paradise to me. In my eyes, one of THE perfect films out there.
Stylish. I remember I had a lot of fun watching this. Will have to try and see it again sometime!
'The Pink Panther' ('64) and 'Ten' would be great to add here.
"Love in the Afternoon" is one of my favorites.
"Grand Prix" is sorely missed here... would have liked to add it to my favorites.
One of my favorite films of all time. What Sullivan finally learns in the end, that the responsibility of a filmmaker isn't about trying to capture stark reality in troubled times, but about bringing some level of light, joy and hope to people, is priceless. Wonderfully philosophical, inspired and charming. A GREAT film.
This must have been quite a revelation for its time: a futuristic fantasy about legalized murder, long before other films played with a similar theme. Le Decima Vittima is showing reality TV antics about three decades in advance. A chillingly forward-thinking 60's sci-fi film, it's so stylish and fun - not to be missed.
Sparse and distinctive. Not much goes on here, only three drifters driving a car on a road to nowhere - a looseness to the film and its plot that's appealing and striking. A sort of freedom and 'we'll do as we please' rebellion. It's existential and I love it... mad, slow pace and all.
Robert Redford's directorial debut is a film that moves me unlike any other. No matter how many times I see it, I still get pummeled by the emotions it stirs up for me. Love Donald Sutherland!
