I think the Bong is by far the best while the Gondry is a little bit lofty but alright while the Carax is terrible after having a really funny opening 10 minutes. I saw it at a film festival a long time ago so I vaguely remember it.
I use TLA here in town with their unlimited plan where I get 2 movies at a time and then can return them to get 2 more. I usually watch 3 movies per day and go in there constantly.

I was thinking about it the other day and there is only really a handful of films I have seen prior to Criterion releasing them on DVD. I saw we don’t go through the Laserdisc list since I was a young lad when the Laserdics were being released and I was about 16 or so when Criterion started to release DVDs.
Seven Samurai
400 Blows
This is Spinal Tap
Silence of the Lambs
Robocop
Time Bandits
Tokyo Drifter
Brazil
Rushmore
Chasing Amy
Spartacus
8 1/2
Traffic
Royal Tenenbaums
Down by Law
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Tokyo Story
Naked Lunch
Hoop Dreams
Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Man who Fell to Earth
Ran
Dazed and Confused
Yi Yi
Claire’s Knee
Fires on a Plain
The Burmese Harp (both of these DVDs were released back to back and funny enough, when I watched these movies they were as a double feature)
Ivan’s Childhood
Stranger than Paradise
The Last Emperor
The Ice Storm
Bottle Rocket
Wise Blood
Chungking Express
Curious Case of Benjamin Button
My Dinner with Andre
What is wrong with it? If it wasn’t for the Criterion Collection giving notice to certain. I just find it rare for me personally to watch great films on Criterion before they were released on Criterion.
I watched this the past week from Saturday to Saturday:
Polyester – **** 1/2
Leather Weapon – * 1/2
Sweet Movie – ** 1/2
The Foot Fist Way – * 1/2
Observe and Report – ** 1/2 (2nd viewing)
WR: Mysteries of the Organism – * 1/2
Twilight of the Ice Nymphs – * 1/2
Mulholland Drive – **
Speed Racer – ** 1/2 (2nd viewing)
A Great Day in Harlem – **
The Mechanic – **
Opera – *
17 Again – * 1/2
Topper – **
Howl’s Moving Castle – * 1/2
My Night at Maude’s – ** 1/2
Rope – ****
Russian Ark – *
L’atalante – *
Sorum – 1/2*
Red – **** 1/2
The Piano Teacher – *
Scanners – *
Whoa there, when I cut and paste from my document, it comes up with a bunch of false ratings, I will give it another shot:
out of five stars
Polyester – four and a half
Lethal Weapon – three and a half
Sweet Movie – four and a half
The Foot Fist Way – two and a half
Observe and Report – four and a half
WR – two and a half
Twilight of the Ice Nymphs – two and a half
Mulholland Dr – four
Speed Racer – four and a half
A Great Day in Harlem – four
The Mechanic – four
Opera – one
17 Again – two
Topper – three
Howl’s Moving Castle – three and a half
My Night at Maude’s – four and a half
Rope – four
Russian Ark – three
L’atalante – three
Sorum – half a star
Red – four and a half
The Piano Teacher – five
Scanners – three
Catherine and Co (the woman who made Fat Girl’s first screenplay, not out on DVD anywhere, acclaimed French sex comedy from the 70s)
Black Lizard (cult classic that also isn’t on DVD)
Sante Sangre (I think this is released in Europe on DVD but nowhere in the states)
early John Waters that aren’t on DVD
I know there is a bunch else but I can’t think of them at the moment.
What I mean by this is like you take how many Criterions you have seen, how many you haven’t and how many Criterions you are willing to watch per week and how many Criterions release in the time you spend watching other Criterions. Anyone good with math?
Didn’t IF screen in Austin for UT’s Austin Cinematheque film series? Sadly I missed the screening of it then but got around to watching it on DVD shortly after. I did however catch the Cranes are Flying, Murmer of the Heart, Les Bonnes Femmes, and Ivan’s Childhood.
So there are 469 (minus a few that are just the boxset counting as a number) releases so far with 13 coming soon. Repulsion comes out late July so that means they release about 3 per month. I think I might be able to figure this out.
Ok, I still haven’t found the proper formula but say I have seen 150 movies from the Criterion Collection and if I watch about 3 per week then it would take me 106 weeks to finish the current batch however during those 106 weeks, about 80 titles have been released so to watch those it would take about 27 weeks which during that time about another 21 titles have been released so to watch that batch, it would take 7 weeks which means about 6 titles have been released and that would take you 2 weeks and by that point, you are pretty much caught up. So if you have seen 150 Criterions, it will take you 142 weeks or almost 3 years to finish it. Damn.
To Derek: I don’t buy them. I have an unlimited pass from a cool video store that buys every Criterion that comes out. I actually don’t own a single movie.
I saw Les Bonnes Femmes as part of the Austin Cinemtheque program and there were a lot of empty seats sadly. I could have saved you a seat if I knew you were coming along…har har.
In Pulp Fiction, Mia and Vincent didn’t win the dance competition but they stole the trophy. You can hear about the theft when Butch is going back to get his watch from his apartment and when he is walking back there is an open window that has a radio playing a news report.
