The Desert of the Tartars

Peace time for a soldier at a border front can be difficult. There is that impending threat of an attack which never takes place. Soldiers are taught to fight and are eager for the same but when they cannot do so, it can be as exhausting as fighting a real war.

thanks for your advice but i fear people would hate me so much after 6 hours of samurai drama they would vote against uchida on principle! i haven't watched the other two parts but i understand they go downhill considerably :( i'm interested in seeing my competition, it has a great title and awesome cast!

Yes S, I was kind of expecting it to be just ok. To be frank, Dutt made two great films. Other than that, his films are just about ok or good. If you are interested in exploring more Dutt although I feel you have watched quite a lot already, I would recommend Aar Paar (This or That) which is a noir inspired thriller. Other than the ending, it is very entertaining. Maybe Mr. and Mrs 55 is also worth trying. Other than that, if you are keen on exploring films under the Guru Dutt banner i.e not directed but produced by him I would highly recommend CID and Chaudhvi Ka Chand. Both are very good. Thanks for your feedback. I will perhaps try Baaz some time in the future though as you recommended, not in a hurry.

I relate with your love for Guru Dutt. I also find his personality charming. It is hard to believe that Dutt was an accomplished dancer and entered the film industry as a choreographer. He looks much too serious and I haven't seen him dancing in any of his films except Pyaasa where he waltzes with Mala Sinha in that dream song sequence.

hey rohit - can you recommend any more 'comedy' films from the sort of naukri era? good ones? i watched one with raj kapoor in the other day and fancied another, but aside from the dutts and roys, not sure where else to look. (speaking of roy, you don't know if bandini is on youtube with subs do you? it's not on any of the usual places i look for films)

Chalti Ka Naam Gadi, Half Ticket, Padosan, Chhoti Si Baat, Golmaal are some great comedies I can think of right now. Not sure if you can find them on youtube with English subtitles.

You know, I used to think the same but I am noticing many of Indian origin recently. Moreover it is difficult to guess the peoples ethnicity as they are camouflaged by usernames.
