Tarkovski is often described as a proponent of a powerful cinema of faith. The master's final piece, THE SACRIFICE, certainly lends credence to this notion. It is simply the most compelling testament to Christ as universal redeemer and an absolutely unforgettable film.
This film hasn't left me since I watched it about a month. The images. The atmosphere. The characters. Even the biblical allusion in the title.
Too painful for this Iranian-American. But an important film that can stand as a powerful counterpoint to those in the West who tend to conflate opposition to the war on terror with support for tyrannical governments like the IRI.
Manipulative Soviet filmmaking at its best!

The very fact that Israel's conscience is troubled -- that Israeli film culture has grappled so elegantly with this dark episode -- puts the lie to all those who seek to demonize or deligitimize Israel. As a testament to Israel's capacity for self-criticism and its foolproof moral compass, Waltz with Bashir is a worthwhile film.
