I would love to see A Boy and his dog re-made, although I do love the original, I think the whole concept could have been taken a step or two further (especially the Dystopian underground society)
I would never like to return to a state of total compliance to whatever mainstream media throws at me. I know that people far more intelligent than I make sub-par products intentionally, knowing that, in all honesty, dumb sells. Just look at the Saw series or the ‘X parody’ films. Most important to my ‘pompous’ mentality is knowing that I’m not falling into the trap that movie, record, and video game execs set
I know this is a bad analogy, so take it lightly; But I would much rather be aware like THX-1138 than the cattle he was escaping
-The Warriors (OG cut of course)
-Metropolis? not sure if that is in
-Once upon a time in the West
-Night of the Hunter
ALSO:
Why is Armageddon in the criterion collection?
I can sort of understand why you could refer something like Snakes on a Plane because of its viral marketing biz…but why is Armageddon actually in the collection? Im not trying to be snarky I am just interested
I agree with you Phil. Films like G.I Joe or Transformers don’t deserve to be among the ranks of the masterpieces that are discussed on this site. If it is ‘just a website’ or purely ‘film for fun’ then why not have such undeniable classics as “Bring it on” or “Scary Movie 5”?
Passion of the Christ:
I was a sophomore in high school and I was already becoming weary of the types of movies my family and friends were all in love with. I already had a liking towards ‘mainstream’ artsy films like The Fountain, but I knew there were much better movies out there. I had started renting movies from ‘G.o.a.t’ lists and the one that really transformed me from casual movie goer to film lover was Passion of the Christ. I remember its realistic interpretation of Christ and its controversial ending affected me so much that from then on, every movie I watched I would thoroughly research everything I could about it afterwards and read interpretations which would lead me to more movies that were just as good, et al.
It was also the first time I noticed something called the ‘Criterion Collection’
lol
I don’t District 9 deserves to be on any negative ish on its ‘message’
Just because we all know that we are all selfish bastards doesn’t make it any less relevant when we are told it
and atleast it was more or less subtle about it, unlike, ahem, Crash
Ah yes that score does have alot to do with it as well. Not to say I prefer westerns in general over Kurosawa, Seven Samurai outshines (and rightfully so) its western re-imagining.
There is no way this could be bad. Watchmen was only ‘bad’ because it tried to condense an ultra-complex multi-tiered story into a couple of hours. Where the wild things was…20 pages that were relatively wordless.
And Mike Spence I am excited when a good mainstream movie is super successful. The success of D9 and Inglorious Basterds i think show the big companys that for the most part we want actual quality in our films and they will hopefully start investing into movies like that more often.
I’m pretty saddened that this is what fellow ‘cinephiles’ degrade themselves to; grade school bickering. I’ve had more civilized conversations about film with people who liked Daredevil. too bad, this site could be so awesome.
My University Library has a lot of Criterion and Obscure films, but some films that you would expect any place to have are strangely missing. + my library has every educational film ever made but I don’t think anyone but me is hyped about that…
Coppola or Tarantino covering GTA would be golden. And definitely Lynch on Silent hill.
Katamari Damacy and Viva Pinata – David Lynch or Wes Anderson, depending on if you want to be fucked up mentally, or uncomfortable but eventually satisfied…somewhat
