Films that made you physically ill after watching about 3 years ago

science of sleep.

really creeped me out for days the more I kept thinking about how bernal’s character was two steps away from going crazier. and how gondry reveled in it.

James Cameron Announces Avatar Day: 15 Minutes of 3D Avatar Free on August 21st almost 3 years ago

If this was 1999, I’d think it an incredible idea since he’d manage to avoid "The Batman Trailer’ effect.

But ultimately, I’m not very keen on watching 15-minute infomercials for IMAX.

Which Film Critics Do You Read? almost 3 years ago

guilty pleasure: armond. every week.

otherwise…basically anyone who happens to write for the house next door, spout, twitch, /film, nyt, indiewire, av club, ny press, voice.

i’m terrible about checking up on LA critics despite being out here.

Heads explode almost 3 years ago

There is always the classic Riki-Oh scene, but that’s more of a head implosion.

best foreign films from 2000 onwards - Japan almost 3 years ago

I remain incredibly partial to Dead or Alive: Birds, as it intentionally took the pace from the middle of the original DoA and took it even further while playing more with Miike’s childhood fascination.

Aoyama’s Sad Vacation and Satoshi Miki’s Tenten/Adrift in Tokyo were two of my favorites from NYAFF 2008.

I missed Matsuko and Departures.

Honestly, you’re not the least bit curious to understand the reasoning or thought process behind BL:POCNO ?

Graphic Novels...do cinephiles like graphic novels? reactions to graphic novel adaptations to film? almost 3 years ago

Larry Fessenden’s The Last Winter graphic novel is an incredible companion to the actual film. In the same manner, Alex Cox’s “sequel” to Repo Man (“Waldo’s Hawaiian Hoiday”) is perfect only if you’re familiar with the original film.

I prefer Metacritic to Rotten Tomatoes; it's fanboy free almost 3 years ago

Metacritic seems way too “cold” as a site to me. It’s perfect for numbers breakdowns and I use it mainly when trying to get quick info and release info on DVDs and Gaming.

RT, in my own opinion, is built more for users and to have a discussion board.

Which Movies Have You Walked Out On? almost 3 years ago

The Transformers sequel. I sat through everything until the set-up for the battle in Egypt.

I had enough by that point.

recommend me some rock related movies. over 2 years ago

@apursansar,

wow. electric dragon and eli eli?

Noise Rock may be more apt for that…but I’ve personally been bummed I could never find a copy of Eli Eli’s soundtrack domestic.

Oh and:

Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey.
American Hardcore

Metal’s well worth the watch and gets amazing when they meet the Swedish Death Metal groups.
AH is…ok. I remember it being super flashy and kind of neat to hear some old Black Flag, but watching H.R. talk about punk roots while a wedding proceeded behind him was jarring.

Hipsters take over the cinema over 2 years ago

I always adhere to the Armond method of telling if someone is a hipster:

Q: “Do you like Wes Anderson?”
A: “Yes.”
-You are a hipster.

Q: “Wait, how does that make me a hipster?”
A: “HIPSTER.”
-you are still a hipster.

but the general slam of something as hipster is fucking lazy. it’s like citing something as “m*mblecore” because the cast is no-name and you’ve never heard of the director, but it features justin rice.

if that were true, ESPN and poker are now hipster approved.

ANTICHRIST (Lars von Trier, 2009) over 2 years ago

I came away from Antichrist with a bit of personal let-down.

For months I had been waiting for it—this visceral thing that shocked a jaded press screening into attacking and haranguing the director. And like a giddy child, I was waiting the morning of New York Film Festival to see it before Von Trier himself would tower over us in all his digital cinematic beauty.

But two things happened:

1) I came away with the sense that this was no where near as violent or horrifying as it grew to on blogs and through Twitter. Spectacle had over-hyped my senses. I wasn’t in awe or shocked. Though this leads to…

2) This is a film about forgiveness and making amends. When I say forgiveness, I don’t mean the basic apology. I mean Von Trier overcoming his long-standing “abuse” in fiction of his female characters, personifying himself as He, and She making him “forgive.” Of course, He ultimately kills her to ward this off. And walking through Eden, as the roots and brush turn into what I took to be She, the nature of Woman finally overtook He in the Epilogue and forced him to “forgive” Her for all the abuse, grandstanding and posturing that He performed.
