haha thanks. i tried to do one with a photo of the sun coming in from the top but when that failed i just went minimalist. i might do a few more in a similar style…maybe.

haha yeah Samantha – Sunshine is so awesome. I saw it last night for the first time and was blown away.

OK. This time, Cameron Crowe’s Vanilla Sky. Except, following on from the feel of the film, it’s all a jumble!

i just copy the pic before me – so like id copy paste the poster above into photoshop and then use the magic wand tool to select the criterion logo and then copy paste into your own design.

Movies you hated that everyone else loves about 3 years ago

Same here with WALL-E. It was so overhyped and when I finally saw it the film didn’t in anyway live up to what I was told. Sure it had amazing visual effects and animation but the supposed ‘brilliant’ non-speaking first 30min was just boring to me.

Also – all my friends love the Boondock Saints and I think it is one of the worst films I have ever seen.

I know they already have a cover for Slacker, but I propose an alternative:

Why I didn't like the film about 3 years ago

I’m gonna join the side defending this film because I absolutely loved it. I loved the style of it, the way she played with contrasts, in age, world views, perspective, imagery. I even used the film as an extra text in my last English exam, as a comparison to the poetry of Emily Dickinson under “belonging”.

Also, you’re halfway there with an awesome soundtrack!

High School Film Club: Please Post! about 3 years ago

The idea to let people choose films is only workable if they know what they’re on about. Last year, a small group of guys from my school got together and watched two films every few weeks, just meeting and discussing and basically we worked off like a rotation thing, where everyone was given the chance to show the group a film or two they they love.

Films we covered:

- Fight Club
- American History X
- The Weather Man
- Donnie Darko
- 12 Monkeys
- The Prestige
- Trainspotting
- Con Air (as a joke)
- The Usual Suspects
- Sin City
- Children of Men

I guess it all depends on the size of the group…

Why I didn't like the film about 3 years ago

um…PolarisDiB…that scene was improv. Bill Murray just did it. There was no arthouse trickery involved…

Favorite use of a song in a film. about 3 years ago

wow, so many awesome ones already mentioned, NIN in Se7en, Head over Heels in Donnie Darko.

I think my all-time fav is Elton John’s Tiny Dancer in Almost Famous, where it is brilliantly used in the bus scene. Cameron Crowe also did an awesome job with Vanilla Sky and Radiohead’s Everything In It’s Right Place for the opening.

Should a movie EVER be rated 10/10? about 3 years ago

haha Drew. I think the whole 10/10 thing is really weird.

I tried to look at this whole thing in a review I did of High Fidelity a while ago: http://filmvisuality.blogspot.com/2009/03/review-high-fidelity.html

STOP THE LISTS! about 3 years ago

Realisations I have had in the last half-hour:
– Wow. I actually really like a lot of Roxy Music songs
– I should probably listen to the whole Neutral Milk Hotel album…eventually
– hey, I do have a My Bloody Valentine song on my iTunes, well done Lost in Translation Soundtrack
– Maybe this film idea isn’t working…stupid geographical locations
– You know how they did that Christian Bale YouTube remix? They should do one of those for the JFK conspiracy guy in Slacker
– How did I mix up Nada Surf and Conor Oberst? damn.

Films with a sense of freedom about 3 years ago

The Wrestler’s ending, even through its ambiguity, really had a sense of freedom and self-acceptance.

The ending to Trainspotting also has direct connotations to freedom.

Oh, and of course, probably the most inspiring, The 400 Blows! That is all about freedom!

Another off Topic/Your Favorite Albums about 3 years ago

Woah – this is hard to pick. I bet as soon as I post this I’ll think of like 10-20 other albums.

Dark Side of the Moon – Pink Floyd
Thirst For Romance – Cherry Ghost
The Crane Wife – The Decemberists
Narrow Stairs – Death Cab For Cutie
Plans – Death Cab For Cutie
In Rainbows – Radiohead
The Bends – Radiohead
The Sound of The Smiths – The Smiths (I know it’s a best of, but all of their stuff is brilliant!!!)…same with Morrissey’s Best Of
Way To Normal – Ben Folds
A Weekend in the City – Bloc Party
Highway 61 Revisited – Bob Dylan
The Alternative to Love – Brendan Benson
Hysteria – Def Leppard

Wow, that’s a really random selection…

Favourite Music Moments in Movies about 3 years ago

Inspired by Cameron Crowe’s list of his 36 favourite music moments in film (http://www.empireonline.com/features/cameron-crowe-greatest-music-moments/), as well as McNutt’s own list (http://mcnutt.wordpress.com/2009/05/15/in-which-mcnutt-shares-his-favourite-music-moments-in-film/), I have decided to find out some of the favourite music moments in movies.

Mine is definitely Tiny Dancer in Crowe’s own Almost Famous.

Also:

- Just Like Honey: Jesus and Mary Chain (ending of Lost in Translation)
- Everything in it’s right place: Radiohead (opening to Vanilla Sky)
- Didn’t I blow your mind this time: The Delfonics (Jackie Brown)
- I’ve Told Every Little Star: Linda Scott (Mulholland Drive’s audition scene)
- Head Over Heels: Tears for Fears (Donnie Darko’s school scene)
- All These Things That I’ve Done: The Killers (Southland Tales’ really trippy drug scene)
- Born Slippy: Underworld (ending of Trainspotting)

There are heaps more but these are what I can think of off the top of my head.

Movies you would like if you were a hermit about 3 years ago

hmm…is it awkward that I love Juno even though I can accept the whole overrated argument?

Anyways, to fulfill the idea Leah set out, I think a film that revels in its simplicity, like Jaws. Or if, like with Juno, we are going down the uplifting teen staple film, then The Breakfast Club.

If it was their first ever film, I propose The Rocky Horror Picture Show just to freak the crap out of them.
