woody allen, definitely….kubrick…judging by all the low-class, high budget ‘movies’ we’ve spewed, i feel like we’ll be remembered more for the schlock than the art…but i hope at least a few people will still be watching Amelie…
Wow guys, great thread XD Um, shitty movie of choice would have to be Center Stage. best dance movie EVER. the screenplay is terrible and its a great example of how dancers can’t act, but i’ve definitely watched it a million times :P
There’s always that one movie that gets you, be it something really intense or, i dont know, Bambi. I know I definitely cried at Lion King, like, a year ago, and I think my mom cried at Ice Age…. so no shame. I cried at the Dark Knight the first time I saw it, and Grave of the Fireflies
Empire wins. Its really the strongest of episodes IV-VI, and I always kinda thought Nausicaa was one of Miyazaki’s weaker films… although what do they honestly have in common?
I got really tired of Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet, since it’s Branagh and we all know he loves himself within the art a bit too much. Even so, I couldn’t force myself to watch the ending half which has the really great scenes. Hmm, have you watched Love’s Labour’s Lost? The setting is cute, but I thought the mixture of Broadway and Shakespeare kind of curdled. I haven’t seen these, but the TV special of As You Like It was supposed to be good, it’s the one in Japan with Bryce Dallas Howard. I don’t know, I can’t really think of any Shakespeare adaptations that I’ve seen that I’ve really liked. Except for Mel Gibson’s Hamlet, which I think is the quintessential Hamlet film. I could really go on an on about it, but those are a few of my suggestions…
I’ll agree that the aging in the Gibson Hamlet was kinda ridiculous, given that Mel is way older than Helena Bonham Carter, and too close to Glenn Close, but you get that in the Branagh too, especially that creepy sexualized Gertrude’s closet scene… I haven’t seen the Olivier version, but is there any film version where they get that age difference right? The Ian McKellen Richard III is really good, and I saw an interesting filmed theater show of Othello from the 80s which was pretty good. I thought the guy who played Iago really did a lot with the character. Just curious, but where do you direct theater?
To add on to Apollo, I really thought The Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack in The Royal Tenenbaums was amusing and endearing, especially in the scene with Margot and Royal in the restaurant… The use of The Blue Danube in 2001 was brilliant, and even though it’s banal, I think the Garden State soundtrack accents the movie perfectly.
I can’t get over how Spielberg completely ruined the Indiana Jones series… Crystal Skull was a crime… And then there’s Peter Jackson, who we all admire for realizing this dense epic trilogy called Lord of the Rings, but King Kong?

Definitely Yann Tiersen in Amelie. And Joe Hisaishi basically makes Miyazaki’s films.

As usual, all I want for my birthday is movies. What are some classics and/or necessaries that everybody should own?

Oh and I don’t think that any of Miyazaki’s films would be quite as good without Joe Hisaishi’s breathtaking soundtracks… especially Spirited Away
