Tokyo Olympiad needs putting back on the list – another vote for Night of the Hunter (so needed) – Le Cop and Le Cop 2 (readily available on tvideotape in the early 90s you now cant seem to get these titles for love or money – Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources – Something Wild (undder-rated Demme 80s comedy thriller) – Mad Max and The Road Warrior – The Year of Living Dangerously (there’s only a crappy version out at the moment – think of all the extra docs that could be added to put the film into context) – Winsor McCay compilation and docs (please!!!!) – all the Hal Hartley movies – anything by Peter Greenaway (The cook… needs a new print sharpish) – I Married a Witch (very, very funny Veronica Lake comedy) – Nothing Sacred (again very funny) – Topper (and why on earth is there no decent dvd of this classic?)
ooo I’ll add Fandango as well – only a basic copy out there (and hard to find) and I,m sure Costner would be up for a commentary – it’s a very funny 80s movie that hardly anyones seen
Yasuzo Masumura’s RED ANGEL – I got this cheap and thought it would be cheesy exploitation – it surprised me by actually beung really rather good – it’s a bit controversial (nurse gets raped and blames herself) but a really extraordinary war movie
1. Disney’s The Aristocats – actually my favourite Disney movie ever too!!!!
2. MASH
3. The honeymoon Killers
4. El Topo
5. Five Easy Pieces
6. Patton
7. Catch-22
8. Performance
9. The Conformist
10. Two Mules for Sister Sara
The Breakfast Club – I was 14 when it came out and I took all the “I never want to be an adult stuff” to heart
Aint got round round to Afghanistan but did do Thailand, Vietnam, Japan….
Screwed me up in the workplace a number of times that movie – But hell I like what I am!!!!!! :)
Hiroshi Teshigahara
Yasujiro Ozu
Akira Kurosawa
Andrei Tarkovsky
Kon Ichikawa
Apichatpong Weerasethakul
Alfred Hitchcock
Werner Herzog
Hayao Miyazaki
Takeshi Kitano
Last couple weeks (new to site) I got:
Goodbye, Dragon Inn and What Time is it There? (Wellspring DVD) – Tsai Ming-Liang
Graveyard of Honor (HVE) -Kinji Fukasuka
Graveyard of Honor (AnimEigo) – Takeshi Miike
In the Realm of the Sense and Empire of Passion (Criterion)
Celine and Julie Go Boating (BFI)
Syndromes and a Century (BFI)
and yesterday I got
Branded to Kill and Pistol Opera (Yume) – yes there’s a better Criterion edition of BTK but these were cheap
Friend (Third Window) – Kwak Kyung-Taek
What would be the point – there’s already perfectly good double disc editions of all the movies. I doubt Criterion could add that much. The whole exercise would be pointless surely.
The Wizard of Oz – its use of colour
Bringing Up Baby – every comedy has tried to match it ever since
Seven Samurai – by gum how many times has this been remade
M – a true horror movie
2001 – where sci-fi grew up
The Eye (the original asian version – though it’s getting on now I suppose – brilliant ending too – where horror films usually fall downOne Missed Call 2 (again the original asian version – and yes it’s far better than the Miike original – awsome story for a chnage)
We really do need a decent copy of the Veronica Lake classic “I Married A Witch”. Very, very funny with the most awesome line “Look father. He’s just like a greek god!” – kills me every time. Get on the case Criterion … “Nothing Sacred” needs a decent disc too.
Le Cop 1 and 2 – these two late 80sw french films seem to have dropped completely off the radar for no good reason.
Atlantic City – deffo needs a Criterion makeover – and give Susan Sarandon a call for the commentary.
Gone With the Wind
2001
Stalker (I’m kinda surprised by the amount of times this is mentioned as I though I was alone in loving this till I got on this site…)
