Absolutely brilliant film.
Very memorable score by Ennio Morricone.
Interesting thematic parallels to The Conformist which was released the same year.
Won the Cannes Grand Prix 1970.
Won Foreign Movie Oscar 1970.
And yet: No official DVD release with English subtitles to be found anywhere in the world!
Emir Kusturica deserves a special mention. There’s various different animals in almost all his films and Kusturica has a great talent of directing them to both comedic and dramatic effect.
One interesting thing to consider: Most likely all digitized films will survive. Digital storage has huge capacity and is very cheap. They’ll all fit into a holographic storage device the size of a football by then.
What might not survive is actual film cans. Those of us who appreciate the texture and feeling of film as a material know that it’s something that is missing from the digital copies.
If we are allowed to venture into the land of hip-hop, the albums of Philly-based group “Jedi Mind Tricks” are usually chock-full of movie references.
Most impressive is probably the track “Razorblade Salvation” which features the alchemist speech from Alejandro Jodorowsky’s “The Holy Mountain” at the end (@2.38):

Quite often their tracks open with a sample from a movie, e.g. “Blood in Blood Out” opens with a quote from Hannibal Lecter in Manhunter (“If one does what God does enough times, one will become as God is.”). “Nadia Cambia” starts with the opening speech from del Toro’s “The Devil’s Backbone” (in Spanish) etc. They also like to use movie samples in their interludes, a wonderful example is “Heart of Darkness (Interlude)” which has the complete “Fire, walk with me” speech from Twin Peaks.

Dušan Makavejev – W.R.: Mysteries of the Organism (1971), out on everybody’s favourite DVD label.
Such a striking image indeed that it also graces the front cover of Amos Vogel’s seminal book “Film as a Subversive Art”.
