EWS is a masterpiece, not just my favorite Kubrick but possibly my favorite film period. One of those films that I enjoy reading about and analyzing myself from time to time, but when it comes down to it it’s the visceral reaction I get from it that makes it so amazing. The ‘feel’ of it is unlike anything else… absolutely mesmerizing.
this is kind of a silly question, but is there any way to find out if/when EWS is being screened somewhere (in the US..)? I’d do practically anything to be able to see it in a cinema. AFAIK there aren’t any websites which specialize in keeping you up to date with showings of old movies across the country or anything like that, which is a shame.
What I really want to know is if the DVD of BARRY LYNDON in this box is a new transfer or the same old non-anamorphic one. And if it IS a new and improved transfer, I really hope it gets a standalone release. I haven’t yet made the switch to blu, and I’m not about to shell out however much money for a blu-ray player just for one film (however much I love it).
Also, worringly, the back-cover for the BARRY LYNDON blu-ray as seen on Amazon states that it is in 1:85.1. So does the back of the blu-ray set. If true, this is truly heinous; chopping off the top and bottom of the image will all but ruin the compositions. What’s so difficult about keeping it in the proper 1.66:1 ratio, Warners? Ridiculous.
Oh yes, ‘lusciously’, that’s a good way to put it. I just love the cinematography in this film. I have a soft spot for 2.35:1 widescreen generally, and Lynch just uses it masterfully here.
It’s such an imaginatively shot picture. I don’t know any other way of putting it. To me it’s the most technically adroit Lynch, by far. The most thought-out, well-structured and aesthetically pleasing.
