About Me

Started going to movies on my own at age 8 (in the 1940s) at neighborhood theater which charged 10 cents and mostly showed B&W films of the 1930s. On Friday nights I especially enjoyed the serials and Laurel & Hardy comedies. On Sundays I saw more current films such as gaudy MGM Technicolor musicals — even at that young age I recognized that “Singin’ in the Rain” was far better than the others. Didn’t discover the wonderful Astaire & Rogers musicals until later. The only Preston Sturges comedy I recall seeing then was “Sullivan’s Travels” — but today my favorite Sturges films are “The Lady Eve” and “The Miracle of Morgan’s Creek.” My favorite film noir was “Out of the Past.” I was very impressed by “The Thief of Baghdad.” (starring Sabu), Seeing “Citizen Kane” was a life-changing experience — and a personal experience, too, since I am related to the Missouri branch of the Hearsts. I collect screwball comedies — I think Preston Sturges wrote dialogue on a par with Shakespeare and Jane Austen. I retired as a cataloger at a New England library.
