I am desperate to see this film; if anyone knows if it is available, online or however else, please let me know. I do not live anywhere near a valid cinemateque so it is very difficult for me to see certain rarer films. I have done endless web searches for many rare films but have not been able to find a number of them. Please help a fellow film fanatique if you can. Thanks!!!!!!!
I am quite fascinated with the relationship between Jean-Luc Godard and Francois Truffaut. I have read their exchange of letters when they drifted apart and it seems that there really is so much more behind their dispute. I would very much like to see this film, but I get the impression that the documentary does not go much deeper about their fall-out beyond that said letter exchange. So, is the film superficial?
The Colour of Pomegranites: like dreams and moving paintings. Like Ken Russell's Mahler, it is a biography of emotions and atmospheres and things that cannot be expressed with words and a concrete sequence of events. It is an insider look rather than an ousider, superficial look, and ultimately tells one much more than if the film had been a traditional narrative following the poet's concrete life from the outside.
What this documentary really shows us is how a pure art form, a pure movement, will almost inevitably become a parody devoid of its original meaning. In the end, the winner will still be the crushing and unshakeable social struncture. This documentary shows that street art needs to be free and out in the streets for everyone; it needs to reach out to everyone rather than stay enclosed in a gallery for a select public
I am pleasantly surprised by this one; It is very good fun! I much prefer Barbarella to James Bond. It's such a silly film yet it is still quite neat. 3/5
Despite an interesting start, I find this film to be weak, perhaps Chabrol's weakest. The character development is poor and it is impossible to buy into certain situations. The denouement just about ruins the film for me. 2/5
There are some very interesting ideas in this film, and for that, it is worth watching. However, I find that the film ends up looking like the Matrix and I did not feel the dream atmosphere at all; in other words, the dreams did not feel like dreams to me but rather like elaborate video games. I also found the film a bit too rushed jumping from one sequence to another at a very rapid pace. 3/5
I think this is a very good and effective documentary that really sets The Sex Pistols within their social context. I really like how each was able to give his own opinion, even Sid Vicious from a previous interview, and this allowed for a fair recount of this important music group. I give it 4/5.
Quite stunning. There's real passion there, you just have to feel it. For anyone who loves music. Original version: 5/5
Promising premise, poor execution and development. 2/5
"You say you want a revolution..." A great film about a small group of students who want to start a communist revolution. This film poses questions about whether murder for politcal ideas can ever be justifiable and displays the disparity between political theory and concrete application.
RIP Sidney Lumet
Silly film with abominable dialogues and terrible, entirely unnecessary CGI effects. It felt like a parody to me. Granted, I did really appreciate some of the cinematography. My verdict: mildly amusing, highly disposable. 2/5
Quite a nice documentary about the other "fab four" supergroup, Joy Division. This documentary takes the time to paint a portrait of the "original modern city" of Manchester and to relate the music of Joy Division both to its local cultural setting as well as to a timeless and universal setting. The tragic end of Joy division with the death of its singer/lyricist Ian Curtis is extremely haunting and truly sad.
This is a film about the banality of a lifestyle based on materialism and sex. It also satirizes the lifestyle of the roman civilization and shows that perhaps the romans were no less barbaric than the others. I found this film very humourous and delirious.
The cinematography is impressive, the costumes are marvelous, the sets and visuals are mind-blowing, Marlene Dietrich is absolutely beautiful...... but the dialogues are poor. If it were not possible to write good dialogues, it would have been a great solution to leave the film silent, with only music.
I am quite fascinated with dreams in general- my own and those of others- but this one is just...dull. Oh yes, and I can't stand digital video, which doesn't help either.
The dialogues in this film are very clever and witty!
Clara Furey is memorable in this film; she is beautiful to watch and has an authentic and raw quality. "CQ2" is not perfect, but it is very inspirational and really does stick with you.
This film is a collage of rumours about the German singer/songwriter and actress Nico. The only insightful commentaries are those by Nico herself (from archive footage), her son Ari, John Cale, and Nico's late aunt. I suspect that most of the others appearing in this film were seeking their 5 minutes of fame. Worth watching for the beautiful music and various video clips and pictures of Nico.
This film is quite beautifully shot with some very excellent sequences, and Sam Riley is rather convincing as Ian Curtis, but the film falls short on the dialogues which are quite weak and cliche oftentimes. The film is much too fast-paced and does not allow for much character development. It omits to show Ian Curtis' creative process, and we do not really get a sense of Curtis' despair and tragedy.
I love when Edie Sedgwick speaks about dreams; something about her dream is unsettling and forshadows things to come. I truly think she could have been a great and unique professional actress.
That's such a beautiful picture of Paul Morrissey, truly remarkable. I saw it in an Andy Warhol exhibit book from the '60s, and it was quite striking.
Yes, it is an excellent film; I particularly loved the ending. It is well worth watching!
I've always loved this one! I watched it quite a lot as a child, and it was my favourite Sinbad film.
This movie is lots of fun, with a number of totally hilarious scenes like the one with Woody Allen and Diane Keaton stuck in the elevator, or again the telephone scene where they try to trap the presumed murderer by playing a crafted recording. Overall, it's light and lovely.
What a terrible film. It is so bad that it made me laugh (in a cynical way, though) at certain moments.
I absolutely could not stand the added CGI.
The Elephant Man is a beautiful, haunting film that lingers in your mind long after it has finished. The music and cinematography really work well to create a very strong atmosphere, and the acting is quite excellent. The first time I saw this film, I cried my eyes out; I could not stop.
I love this movie; it is very beautiful aesthetically, and very innovative and captivating. The only thing I didn't like much was the gangster side-story. I think it was rather silly. I would have developed the film more around the relationships between the different characters.
