    i found a copy of kinoshita's ballad of narayama since imamura's has been a favorite of mine

    Great pick! The Kinoshita was actually the best film I had seen in 2012. Haven't watched the Imamura yet, but I guess it must be very different stylistically.

    u could say that lol. this one is much more formal, with the artificial backdrops and dramatic scene changes...but i'm liking it a lot!

    Yes, I was like wtf? at first during the intro, but then I simply relaxed and opened up. I think I only watched it because it was also on a VHS that I borrowed for another film. But more Kinoshita was welcome anyways, and I didn't regret it.

    ultimately i think it might suit the mythical material better than imamura's naturalist take but i really enjoyed both. i haven't seen any other kinoshita, what else shall i try??

    The only other I've seen is Years of Joy and Sorrow (1957), which is mainly about a family in Japan during WWII - similarly impressive but more of a contemporary touch/less mythical. She was like a Wild Chrysanthemum sounds very yummy, indeed. :-)
