Yes, paltry collection for an out-and-out cinemaphile, but these are premium prices for a broke college student.

really?!? as much as i love Martin Balsam, the fact that his disgruntled ex-motorman was petty and greedy enough to involve himself w/ Blue/Grey/Brown.. drives me nuts how cavalier he was. The sneeze that tipped Matthau off at the end has got to be the most satisfying thing in all of cinema… hell, first time i saw the film i yelled at the screen in joy
I swear, I feel so compelled to spend every last penny I have on their stuff.. Both companies have incredibly sexy products that look so alluring on my shelves. I frequently spend time at bookstores and shops fellating Taschen books. As an art history major and omnivorous aesthete their diverse product line of literature about art, film, design, sex, etc. is right up my alley.
I just thought I’d stop by and say hello. I’ve been lurking in this thread for a while, and I love the conversation and discussion about film that I see on a regular basis. I’m a 24 year old grad student in art history in New Jersey, and my feverish devotion applies not only to painting, sculpture, architecture, and new media, but to film, music, literature, design, television, theatre, etc. i have a voracious and insatiable appetite for culture and its artistic detritus, not only as a consumer of such but as a willing producer. i’m such a whore for this kind of stuff.
my sense of awe and wonder about film began probably with three films: The Wizard Of Oz, Honey I Shrunk The Kids, and The Rocketeer. now don’t scoff at the latter two, they are classic childrens films that for me fed my curiosity about the world in interesting ways. you could say those films were an early primer on the induced landscapes of Jodorowsky, Deren, Tarkovsky, and Cocteau.
i’ve been under art’s spell practically since birth, ignited when my aunt showed me her book on Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel frescoes and stoked by her and my parents as they exposed me to the arts, and then solidified in my high school AP Art History class.
i am all about the modern, the cutting edge, the avant-garde, the situationist, the difficult, the eternal, the maddeningly intellectual
i just finished watching for the umpteenth time Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!.. it was on TCM and i indulged.
one could get a pretty good idea of my taste from my profile and/or the alternative Academy picks thread on this site.
hope to continue here and get to know all you lovely people
right now i’m debating whether or not to pick up a copy of the Marat/Sade oop DVD… i’ve heard such shitty things about the quality of it that it is disappointing me. i fucking love that film.
Josh, the terrible thing is that over time, at least in my experience, the more holes you fill in your collection/experience, the more holes you find. the rate is geometric!! it makes one feel like Zeno, trying to catch up with the tortoise…
Josh, I love that you have Stalker as your profile image, I just watched it again a few nights ago… its such a shame that my only experience of it has been at home.. i’m dying to see it as it should be seen.
its a hard three-way between Andrei Rublev, Solyaris, and Stalker… each is so epic and powerful in their own right
i think they form a loose trilogy about the need for people to find meaning and purpose in life, from the very mud and dirt of medieval Russia to an outpost orbiting a distant planet… what I love is that, especially for his science fiction, is that it is very much organic, especially Stalker
One of my favorite segments of any film is when the Stalker is on the ground, looking up at the Writer and Professor, and basically begging for his life by justifying his job as ferryman for wayward souls, the climax of that being that terrific shot of them just outside of the room as it rains inside of it… i don’t think there can ever be a more earned catharsis.. i feel that rain wash over me
yeah, you really cannot explain it to someone who hasn’t seen it. matter of fact, it is probably best that one enter the film having as little knowledge of it as possible, and forming your own opinions and conclusions from the viewing of it (an understanding that will evolve and deepen but not improve over time [at least in the traditional sense])
Where do you live, by the way? From what i’ve read of your posts you seem like an excellent person to sit with and watch films all day… ;)

We should petition Peter Becker to test-balloon a CC branded store.

It reminds me of this subset of BDSM enthusiasts into financial domination and penis humiliation…
“Look at how small you are!!!”
“You loser, you work all day, and then you beg to spend your money on me!!!”
It’s quite charming… given that most of us have the proclivity to become submissive at the mere mention of a Bresson retrospective…
