Wild Strawberries about 3 years ago

After Fanny & Alexander this is probably my favorite Bergman. Or perhaps it’s my favorite, and F&A is my second-fave. As with most Bergman I’ve seen, it is so beautiful, so gently tragic, so meditative. This may be an odd thing to praise, but I love that Bergman never resorts to the sort of gratuitous violence that seems to almost inevitably occur in other films, and his work is no less profound or impactful for it.

wholeheartedly agree re: alfie. what an incredibly swingin’ soundtrack — and i get the theme song (the jazz one, not the cher one) stuck in my head all the time.

Art-House films people give you "shit" for not liking almost 3 years ago

“The collected body of work of David Lynch. If that is “art-house.””

took the words from my mouth, matthias. i’ve never really been able to see the appeal.

also seconding the post about synechdoche, ny. my co-workers were all raving about it, but i agree: it was a pretentious pity party. i feel that way about all films about directors directing films and their wives/girlfriends who just don’t understand. yawn.

mike, i’m not sure who exactly you’re referring to, as from where i’m sitting it looks like pracitcally everyone in this thread has acknowledged that they either didn’t “get” or simply disliked whichever film they mentioned. nobody’s saying all the “pretentious intellectuals” are wrong and some critically acclaimed film “blows.”

do you really think it’s necessary to properly analyze and fully understand a film in order to not enjoy watching it?

The Spectrum of Affinity for The Big Lebowski almost 3 years ago

Love it, would call it one of few classic comedies of the past couple decades, but I’m not obsessive about it by any means. It doesn’t often cross my mind to watch it, but I’m always so glad I did when I do. It’s very well cast, which I think is one of its strong points for me.

glad to see many of my suggestions have made their way onto the site. i recently saw “i shot andy warhol,” and i think it’s mary harron’s best — yet it’s the only one not on here! i’d love if it were added.
