Matt Burgess: Filmography

Beautifully crafted nightmare, Borowczyk's masterpiece as well as his darkest and most personal. He re-imagines Jekyll/Hyde (and later his demonic bride) as libertine heroes, murdering and raping authority figures and laying waste to the upper middle class all in pursuit of pleasure. The last scenes where the couple go wild, destroying their possessions, fucking, biting at each other's flesh is haunting and hypnotic.

Sweet Movie

Sex, food, politics, anarchy, excess. Some of the most sensual sequences ever filmed, a kaleidoscope of blood, sugar and vomit. The ending scene of the nude Carole Laure drowning and masturbating in a tub of chocolate is one of the best things I have ever seen.

Sweet Movie

One of the greatest animations ever made, a surreal psychosexual epic centered around the narrative of a woman trapped in an brutally oppressive society finally finding liberation and sexual empowerment by embracing the supposed 'evils' of nature and paganism. 70s excess at its finest, striking images of shape-shifting orgies and vaginal violation set against political commentary praising revolution and rebellion.

Naked Lunch

One of Cronenberg's few failures, it just doesn't really work at all. There's no sense of delirium you would expect from a 'drug' film. Awesome bug/orifice imagery but it all feels empty, boring and phony, never really reaching 'fever dream' intensity, meandering on and on with the same blank smirk. also, Burroughs depicted as a bland eunuch who wants to fuck Judy Davis more then any of the boys? Huh?

The Lonely Lady

Thank god for Pia Zadora. She is shat on regularly by the press but always gives it her all and looks great doing it. This is her finest moment. Underneath the film's made-for-tv aesthetics, shitty soundtrack and obvious campy delights, believe me it really IS an accurate portrayal of the industry - a soul-sucking cesspool of assholes, sleazebags, impotent intellectuals and predatory lesbians lurking in hot tubs!

L'homme blessé

Depressing, sexy queer French film about a lonely, awkward boy's sexual awakening. Knowing exactly he wants but clueless in ways to obtain it, he stumbles through life, falling hard for a cruel and self-loathing bisexual street thug and wandering around a grimy train station full of glaring hustlers, dirty old men and bums, desperate for love. One of the great unknowns in gay cinema, cringe-worthy in its realism.

L'homme blessé

Awesome 70s 'New York-as-hell' flick about a prim school-teacher's thirst for annihilation. Its been labeled by critics as a conservative morality tale against promiscuity but the actual film isn't really political, its more a character study of a self-destructive person, constantly looking for increasingly dangerous and reckless thrills to enliven her mundane life. Not gonna lie, I could relate.

Caligula

Jaw-dropping excess, all the drama behind the scenes have made a disjointed mess of the film itself but it works brilliantly as pure, balls-out spectacle. Shakespearean actors hamming it up in sublimely grandoise sets and locations, amongst masses of tits, piss, fist-fucking and cocksucking. Fucking awesome.

Bizarre, overlooked by even fans of the series. While it doesnt always live up to its potential (considering its made by a Fellini collaborator), it worth watching for its surreal imagery, exotic Egyptian locations and Gemser's strongest performance (especially in the scenes where she's forced to model with rotting corpses by her abusive photographer boyfriend, a great pisstake of the Joe D'Amato-helmed flicks).

Forever Emmanuelle

A hedonistic girl's journey for sexual immortality leads her on a path of a long lost jungle tribe. Beautifully filmed, erotic 'Emanuelle' spin-off, very sincere and sweet, with oodles of hilarious, breathless and lovingly pretentious dialogue. God I miss this era.

Grease

Vapid pop escapism, just shut off your brain, relive your childhood. Despite the aggressive faux nostalgia, I'll always love this film for its bold colours, comic book aesthetics and character designs, as well as the glorious CHA CHA!! who for ten minutes transforms the movie into 'Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!"

Secret Ceremony

Along with Robert Altman's '3 Women', one of the most bizarre and dream-like films released by a major studio. Very beautiful, eerie and strange. Mia Farrow's best performance.

Basic Instinct 2

Would be a INSTANT camp classic if crazy ass Sharon Stone (she's genuinely awesome here) was on screen the entire time and if we weren't subjected to endless scenes of wet blanket David Morrissey wandering around the city and being totally boring. The clear highlight is Stone's breathless monologue, “When you think... about FUCKING me... and I know you do... how do ya picture it... doctor?"

Moment By Moment

A jaw-dropping cult classic that has to been seen at least once in your lifetime (hence the high rating for something that otherwise has no redeeming qualities what so ever). I'm a huge 'bad cinema' fan but this was hard for even me to get through. One hot mess of a film. A nude, stiffly lipped Lily Tomlin moaning "oohhh Strip!!!" is a hard image to shake.

Waiting to Exhale

God I could watch movies like this all day, black female-driven melodrama at its very finest. Nothing is more pleasurable than sexual empowerment stories and hating on asshole men and white bitches. Angela Bassett's meltdown is epic: "I give you 11 fucking years of my life and you're telling me you're leaving me for a WHITE BITCH????"

The Bodyguard

Cute, slickly-shot schmaltz thats way more sincere and strange than its "made-for-a-cheap-buck" reputation suggests. Don't think too much, relax, strap on the wig-and-leather and belt out the best Whitney impression.

Romeo + Juliet

Like all Luhrmann stuff, overblown, painful and oddly dull, however filled with sublime art direction. His most successful BY FAR though, just kinda wish I could cut all the grating dialogue and watch a pretty music video version of it.

The Wicker Tree

A cute little throwback to the 70s classic but completely lacking its hypnotic power. There are some beautiful shots of ruins and pastoral locations but on a whole the acting is dismal (especially from the braindead lead) and the script is pretty lazy and oddly chaste, lacking a sense of 'ritual' like the original. Dont expect much. Way better than the Nic Cage mess obvs.

The Room

Obvs fun, weird and dumb-as-fuck but kinda obvious when compared to other cult classics. White frat boys eat this shit up cause it makes them feel intelligent and savvy, "omg bro this is SO bad HAHAHA holy shit man this makes no sense". Duh dude, relax your flaps. But its just a particularly odd vanity project gone viral. Its cute and all but there's better and weirder 'bad cinema' out there to be discovered.

Pure pop bliss, Parker Posey at her very best.

Wild Orchid

So fucking fun, sexy and ridiculous. Hot weirdos in exotic locations, who wouldn't want to live in the movie? How can anyone hate this? Best scene is in the back of a limo with Mickey Rourke somehow convincing a bored middle aged bourgeois couple to fuck in front of him while a pensive Carrie Otis watches horrified and aroused.

Querelle

Bizarrely has the reputation as 'lesser Fassbinder' (too stylized? too sexual? too queer?) but for me its his most ALIVE. A beautiful experience, erotic, melancholy, hilarious. The queers in this film are armed with switchblades, tough, violent, funny and refuse to be labeled, this is a delirious glimpse of what gay film could have been like before it went all bland, inoffensive, domestic and overly corporate.

Querelle

Zzzz. One of Franco's more retarded efforts, lots of dull drawn out scenes of ugly fat girls wandering around, saying stupid shit and awkwardly slobbering over each other. Still the pulpy "ghost rapist cult" story has its charm and some really beautifully eerie hallway shots, but for Franco completists only.

Cruising

Gritty, 'NYC-as-hell' thriller. This is not so much about gay culture (I WISH gay clubs played punk music and looked this fucking hot and dark) but about men/masculinity in general, almost like a queer 'Fight Club'. It is only ruined by a lame ending that would work if they had the balls to have Pacino get 'nasty' rather than just walk around as a sexless voyeur. Still all the leather and sleazy vibes are pretty hot.

Obsessed

Ultra-fun, blaringly obvious campfest ending with a Beyonce-white bitch beatdown that makes me long for more black female action heroes. Idris Elba is too good for this.

Obsessed

A rather silly twist ending cannot negate the truly gorgeous atmosphere and beauty dripping from every frame. The sexual undercurrent also sets it apart from the pack, its soundtrack full of ghostly, erotic moans.

The Legend of Hell House

Practical Magic

Interesting failure. Its clear the director had far more ambition than anyone would expect for a project like this but then at some point the studios got involved and we're left with an odd mix of sensual imagery/art direction (almost 70s Czech new wave!) and typical American rom-com schmaltz. Its the awful music that's most at fault here. Imagine if they kept Michael Nyman's stunning (but "too European") score?

The House of Yes

I love Parker Posey. Pretty static in terms of filming but brilliantly demented screenplay with awesomely fucked up characters.

The House of Yes

Fucking awesome and endlessly fascinating homoerotic subtext ruined by the fact that everything else just sucks. Worth slugging through the excruciating boring "scares" at least once just for fact that this is the gayest film aimed at the masses EVER made and for that reason alone makes it much more interesting than typical slasher sequel cash-ins. But sadly not interesting enough.

Piranha

Exhilarating trash, perhaps the most unabashedly perverted, big budget gore flick in recent memory. Bonus points for all the tits and ass, Jerry O'Connell's bitten off cock and Chelsea Handler as the Sheriff.
