I’m sure that there is already a thread for the topic, “What film is a guilty pleasure for you?” But I’m not talking about films like Ghostbusters or Happy Gilmore. I’m talking about films that are, for the most part, universally hated. Example? Well mine would be Halloween 3: Season of the Witch. That movie OWNS! . . . in my opinion. What horrible movies do you guys enjoy?
I enjoy Alien 3, but I think Aliens is far superior. Alien 3 just retracks the steps of the first Alien, except it’s directed by Fincher, who in my eyes is way better than Ridley Scott. I feel that if Fincher could do what he wanted to do with Alien 3 WITHOUT having the studio but in, Alin 3 could have been gold.
I wasn’t a fan of The Reader at all. The idea of sympathy for a Nazi who’s illiterate, even when she let people burn down in that church/barn (?) sickens me. If the director walked into this room right now to try and argue that it’s about love I would smack him across the face for making such a egocentric film. I guess I have to admit that I’m a little offended by it, since half of my family is Jewish. Usually I’m not offended by content, as I watch anything from Salo, Irreversible, those Guinea Pig movies, etc.
I had the chance to talk to the Boston Globe film critic Wesley Morris, and he shared my sentiments. I’m glad to see that there are a few of us out there who share this opinion.
Another film that I get shit for not liking is Malick’s Badlands. I really liked The Thin Red Line, and I’m thinking about giving Badlands a second viewing, but damn, Martin Sheen mumbles a lot and Sissy Spacek sucks in this movie.
I watched the director’s cut of Halloween the other day, and I noticed something: he likes to film the human condition in peril. There are many close ups in his films showing people’s facial expressions, like Brian Posehn’s character in The Devil’s Rejects, or the young boy who gets beaten to death by a tree branch-wielding Micheal Myers. Here we see the camera linger on his face; we don’t see the branch hit him, but we hear it and we see the kid’s contorted face. His films are packed with shots like these.
But Mark, it is a deep question! Freud would love it; be impregnated by a phallic alien or skinned alive by a creature that has a vaginal shaped mouth.
I saw on their site that they were going to release Mulholland Dr. Even if the transfer is equal to or less than the DVD transfer, it would be worth it alone just for the features and (what sounds like) a Criterion-esque booklet.

I wasn’t saying Halloween 3 was a bad movie. I just consider it a guilty pleasure because it doesn’t get old to me, and is universally hated.

I think David Fincher’s Panic Room is underrated. Sure, the script may not be top notch, but it’s a technical masterpiece.

One last film that I get shit for not liking would have to be Antonioni’s Blow-Up. Personally, I think it’s really dated and it didn’t do much for me.

Would it be too mainstream of me to say Strangers in Paradise and The Bicycle Thieves?
Also, I think that William Friedkin’s Bug is rather minimalistic, and good.

Primer is really good, but I would consider it “hard sci-fi,” like Gattaca or even 2001.
