Funny, funny movie in a POW camp. This was before MASH made the situation of war funny, but it led to its own TV show too. The men have to keep themselves entertained, Holden plays another POW cynic (he does it well), and there is a mystery thrown in to find a traitor in the camp.
A kind of 40 year old virgin with a mostly Japanese cast. All the best bits were in the trailer. The hour and a half run time adds nothing but awkwardness. This is an example of a quirky independent flick going too far over the edge.
Some good comic bits. I have to attribute more scenes that develop the romance between Astaire and Rogers whether through musical numbers or straight dialog to George Stevens' direction. While I liked the playfulness of the more upbeat song and dance numbers in this one, I thought the comedy was a little behind that of Top Hat.
Another great use of B&W by Bogdanovich. They're sly, conniving, swindlers, but you care for them.
There are many black and white movies that still feel very warm. The black and white in this picture is stark, very stark. This adds to the sometimes severe, often unblinkingly unpleasant parts of Bruce's life. The movie is a funny, erotic, disturbing, piercing, impactful semi-documentary style master work! Here's the question: "What's dirty and what's clean?"
I like Rainn Wilson from the Office and he was ok in this, not great, but ok. Anna Faris also had an ok supporting role. But I'm not a fan of Uma or Luke so I couldn't connect with the romantic couple. This wasn't as funny or super as I expected.
I've finally seen the first Terminator movie! It all looks so dated now. The relentlessness of the cyborg Terminator keeps the heroes on the run. The plot is one huge chase. The one night of love between Sarah Connor and Reese was corny. An ok set-up for the Terminator franchise, I guess, but not much meat on the endoskeleton bones.
Would have loved to see more of Aykroyd as Sennet, Kline as Fairbanks, Lane as Goddard, and the filmmaking process in the early days of Hollywoodland. Downey Jr. is excellent in technically recreating Chaplin's physicality and touching as we see the tears that this clown hid with a smile.
I've seen all the Bond movies including the unofficial Never Say Never Again and the Casino Royale with Woody Allen. Not reviewing any of them till I re-view them because I can't keep them straight in my head. I've seen this one more than once now, and man, I was surprised how much I had forgotten! There is a lot more to the plot, more of a traditional mystery, than I remembered. It doesn't get a full five stars 'cause there were some things that bothered me. The opening graphic now seems like a rip-off, because the body double with the hat is so obviously not James Bond. The Bond Theme with groovy sixties colored dots blinking around is cool, but then I forgot there are two more songs that you have to wait through before it gets to the story. You have to wait a lot longer still before Bond makes his appearance. Then it gets more exciting and suspenseful. Q was not yet developed and so there are not so many gadgets. Well technically I learned from a special feature that the character of Major Boothroyd who briefly gives Bond a new gun is Q's real name, but he doesn't have much of an impact. Connery shows he is a suave, cool, fit, always one step ahead of the villains kind of spy guy. The dragon tank/tractor thing is ridiculous and Joseph Wiseman and Zena Marshall playing part-Asians is embarrassing. The radioactive protective gear looks pretty silly today too. The design of Dr. No's living quarters and the radioactive laboratory almost makes up for the dated suits. Dr. No's underground chambers, conceived of by production designer Ken Adam, and Jamaica as the exotic locale set the standard for the look of future 007 films. These first Bond girls are beautiful as well.
I avoided seeing this for quite awhile, but surprisingly I enjoyed this strange movie. I saw a sold out midnight showing of this film as part of a cult film series and annual Big Lebowski celebration in Cleveland. A friend clued me in to a theory that The Dude's adventure is loosely based on some Chandler style film-noir. With Sam Elliott as the narrator/stranger and a few references to tumbling tumbleweeds there are also elements of a western. How these two things combine I'm having trouble figuring out. But the movie is a whole other thing. I loved Jeff Bridges performance as The Dude. Goodman was twisted as the violent foil to The Dude's stoned, easy going approach to life. Well, life doesn't offer easy going to The Dude. Moore, who I generally like, was so odd in her role, but good. Buscemi was hilarious as the belittled buddy on Walter and The Dude's bowling team. Hoffman was excellent as the supposedly naive secretary of the gruff and supposedly charitable Big Jeffrey Lebowski. A trophy wife, freaky German nihilists, a pervert bowling challenger, a porn producer, an ineffective private eye, and a handful of various thugs round out the rest of the supporting cast and seemingly drug induced plot. Also included are some way out there dream sequences. Most of the time I didn't find myself laughing because it was strange, but I did find a lot of the well written dialog and a few of the wacky situation funny.
This profile needs updated a bit. Chow Yun-fat was not in this movie. And this review is for the American released version of the film. A grand epic piece of entertainment. The editing seems a bit rushed in scenes other than the battle scenes. This may be because of the cutting down of the two part version released in China. I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that the theme song, A River that has No End (?), if eligible, will be nominated for an Oscar. CGI was used to expand the horizon of wide shots and navy boats on the river. There really were massive numbers of live soldiers in the battle scenes though. Unlike Ninja Assassins, which I saw recently with its fighting sequences heavy on the CGI, this historical epic allows you to see the martial art skills of the lead figures in the battles. This is like China's version of War and Peace. Based on the 14th century novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the story is set roughly in the 3rd century CE. Prime minister Cao Cao (Zhang), who has conquered many warlords of northern China, bullies the young emperor into sending him to defeat two "rebel" armies to the south. Liu Bei (You) leads the smaller force and Sun Quan (Chang) is lord of the southern kingdom. Liu Bei's military strategist/diplomat/reader of signs of nature especially the weather, Zhuge Liang (Kaneshiro) travels to form an alliance between the two armies in preperation for Cao Cao's attack. Kaneshiro is awesome in this wise scholarly role. This is the type of wise adviser role usually played by an old man with a white beard, but he is young and easy on the eyes according to my wife. Sun Quan's viceroy Zhou Yu (Tony Leung) is the other major military strategist, who really appreciates the art of war and the beauty of music. Leung is also excellent in a strong heroic role. Sun Quan's sister wants in on the action too and serves as a spy for awhile. Zhou Yu's wife Xiao Qiao seeks peace and is willing to do what she can to further the success of the Alliance's cause. Other generals and skilled fighters in the Alliance include Zhao Yun, the ex-pirate Gan Xing, and Guan Yu. Some of these men are hard to keep track of in the heat of battle. But the military planning and missions each man takes on does a lot for making the elaborate clashes accessible for the audience. The brief moments of humor, the romance between Zhou Yu and his wife, the carefully planned attacks and counter attacks, the kinetic and disciplined hand to hand combat all add up to a historically epic story worth seeing!
Wright and Cotten are very strong leads. I couldn't get past the weird fact that she was named Charlie after him though, and their relationship was eerily a little inappropriate early in the movie. Also Wright's romantic scenes with the detective were overly melodramatic. The movie is a thriller with some unusual elements. It isn't really about a slow reveal of Cotten's character's true nature. That is pretty evident to anyone paying attention from the beginning. It is more about a slow build of impending danger and Wright's character discovering the truth. Travers as the father of the Newton family and Cronyn as his perfect murder obsessed friend are amusing. The younger Newton children are charming and precocious, though it doesn't seem as if the brainy little bookworm fits the family in a way. I didn't appreciate Collinge as the mother of the Newton family. I had a hard time figuring out what the waltz that plays multiple times in the story had to do with the mystery. I guess that comes from losing touch with that form of popular entertainment. That clue dates the film. Hitchcock does give us brief glimpses of hints of things to come like the subtle facial expressions and unintentional hand muscle movements of Joseph Cotten. A different sort of cat and mouse game.
I appreciate the look behind the silent movie world of the time. I see a bit of the plot of The Magnificent Seven and a slight reference to the man with no name trilogy. However, the three comics don't mesh well together and the jokes are more miss than hit.
I love the Coen Brothers' recreation of period detail. The gangster jargon is so thick at times that I had trouble following the plot at the beginning. I particularly liked Harden's and Turturro's performances. The movie looks handsome as the cinematographer says the Coens wanted it to look. It's about a man looking out only for his own survival amidst his violent world where double and triple crosses are prevalent.
A story of a great man. A story about justice, injustice, and the power of intellect to overcome corruption.
I have seen a stage play of this basic story. I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THIS!!!
That gangster James Cagney can sing and dance!! I enjoyed this biopic very much especially for Cagney's against type performance. He is very talented.
A movie I watched in school. Atticus deserves the AFI #1 movie hero honor. A great example of a classic book being translated well into a classic film.
The story grips you. The internal struggle of the main character is at once suffocated by guilt and uplifting.
Set in Cleveland, it's at a Browns game where Lemmon is injured. The first great pairing of Matthau and Lemmon.
This movie version is a little psychedelic at times, but the music is good and the themes are important to understanding how Naziism came to power in Germany during this time.
Don't let the bad critical reviews of the remake scare you away from the story. The story is very good and this original is very compelling. Mercedes McCambridge who provided the voice of the devil in the Exorcist is a young woman (still with a unique voice) in this film; she gives a memorable performance.
Funny, funny movie! And smart. Holliday is the ultimate platinum blond ditz without any social grace that all future ones are based on. William Holden is also a favorite of mine. I love the characters he plays including this one.
Great romantic comedy! Well written! All the old couples being interviewed are cute. If you like this movie check out The More the Merrier from the 40's. Billy Crystal is a very different lead than Joel McCrea, but Meg Ryan has a lot in common with Jean Arthur in that movie. Every joke, every relationship nuance is funny and real.
So much to love! I especially enjoyed the dueling pianos of Donald and Daffy, Mickey and Bugs sky diving, the effects combining the live action and animation, the film-noir-ish mystery, and all the old Hollywood aesthetics.
Religious satire, I love it! Gantry has an image to uphold for his flock, he has the skills to be a dynamic preacher, but how long can he keep fooling the flock because he's really a conartist.
By the time the Oscars started, narrative movies had already been around for roughly two decades. And this was the last big year for silent pictures. This film impressed me because the acting is less over-the-top than earlier silents, the story is good, and the camera work and use of tints to suggest different locations and emotions made for visual interest.
Suspenseful road movie. Interesting look at Canadian countrysides and villagers. Character study of marooned German U-boat soldiers trying to blend in till they can make their way to the safe US border (takes place before the US entered World War II).
I don't remember much of the specifics of this film, but I remember I enjoyed it. It was the first film with Sophia Loren that I watched and one of the first foreign pictures. I knew that Loren was generally considered a sex symbol, so I was impressed by the ravaged emotion she portrayed. De Sica continues to show the realism and tragedy of war.
Whitaker is amazing, at turns charming and scary!! McAvoy is very good too as the naive doctor who realizes his flaws and the horrors he has had a hand in much too late.
