Which movies would you like to see on The Auteurs? over 2 years ago

Hi, I’m new here =D
I suggest adding Shunji Iwai’s Love Letter, Hana & Alice, as well as Rainbow Song (which he produced)
as well as films by Tetsuya Nakashima, like Kamikaze Girls, and Memories of Matsuko.
And how about Linda Linda Linda?

Best of Recent Asian Cinema over 2 years ago

All About Lily Chou Chou… anything to do with Shunji Iwai, I wish The Auteurs would add him already.
Hana & Alice
Memories of Matsuko
Oldboy
Linda Linda Linda
Paprika
Tekkonkinkreet
Dreams
3 Iron
Nobody Knows

Hmm… I should really expand my Chinese cinema beyond Yimou, Kar-Wai and Ang Lee. Any suggestions?

what scene gets to you? over 2 years ago

Okay, I admit it. I cried on this film. It’s just so heartbreakingly entertaining xD You know you’re watching her life up to the point of her death, yet you are presented with such a colorful view of her life that you can’t help but watch. The final scene, with everyone singing Magete Nobashite, and Kumi’s final okaeri to her sister always gets to me. I can’t help it.

What is your favorite Koreeda Hirokazu film? over 2 years ago

Nobody Knows blew me away at the cinema,
but Still Walking and After Life are right there on top.
I still wanna watch Maborosi, but I haven’t found the right moment yet.
I didn’t enjoy Distance, though. Is that normal? xD

Top Films of 2009 - so far over 2 years ago

I’ve seen around 30 films released this year (and countless others from other years xD), and my top would be (in no particular order)… Red Cliff 2, Coraline, Huacho, Public Enemies, Star Trek and Up haha

oh man! Yeah! When she’s singing all about love returning home to find her guy married with a family, and her own quiet “tadaima”. It connects with that whole final “okaeri” – Kumi was always there for her!! xD And Eita saying “Matsuko obasan” xD

Looking for Asian Comedy over 2 years ago

I second Acerk’s suggestions and add Swing Girls to it.
And… I’m gonna throw this out there, but I laughed a lot with Shonen Merikensack.
I also laughed a lot with the McDull films. My Life as McDull, Prince de la Bun and yes… even Alumni.

Film Education for My Children over 2 years ago

Well I grew up watching Enter the Dragon xD and Karate Kid.
There was also Jurassic Park, Star Wars, and many Disney films.
Start out with Disney’s or Looney Tunes’ animated shorts,
like Silly Symphonies and the such. Continue moving through
films like The Sword in the Stone, or The Three Caballeros -
You can also start watching Studio Ghibli films like Totoro.

Don’t forget to let your kid watch films with Jim Henson’s puppets,
like Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, The Goonies, The Neverending Story…
or The Storyteller miniseries. ^^

and mix it with with some Pixar. xD

it’s great to have a broad variety of stuff to get kids interested in different things.

help! choosing best of 2009 over 2 years ago

Hey, guys!
I thought I tried my luck here =D
Some friends and I discuss who and what should get nominated (we did this last year), so this year we thought we could go a little bit bigger, and ask for people to help us choose.

The rules for films are simple,
1. All films, regardless of language, are eligible
2. Only movies listed on IMDb on the year of the award, or released between February January to December in any city of any country around the world are eligible.
3. Films with a very limited release, and/or problems with distribution will likely have points for them and might be eligible for the next two years.
4. Since all the nominated films could be foreign, there will be no “Best Foreign Film” award.
5. Sorry. No documentaries or shorts at the moment.

To be able to give your opinion, you only need to watch 1 film a week – that means 48 films this year.

You can read a more ‘detail’ description on my website,
http://personal.amy-wong.com/2009/02/28/experiment-awards-2009/

if you are interested in voting, just leave a comment in that post.
The more, the better the experiment will run, right?

well, coming December, I will email (if you comment on the link post, I’ll get your email privately) everyone to remind them about the January 7th date.

It will be all categories like the Academy Awards, except
- No Foreign Film
- No Documentaries
- No shorts (animated or docus or live action)

regular Acting awards for male lead, female lead, and both supporting.
best film, best director.
art direction, cinematography, costume design,
film editing, score, song, sound editing, sound mixing
screenplay adapted, original

all of those 5 nominees.

Makeup, and visual effects 3 nominees.

we’ll get everyone’s nominees suggestions,
pick the ones with most mentions,
and released the “official” nominees.

Leave a time to catch up on some of the nominees,
re-watch some others… vote
and tabulate again.

The more people from around the world, the merrier~

there isn’t distinction between foreign films and films in the English language. =D
and yes, only films listed on IMDb for 2009, unless they are super independent…
in which case there’s a two-year period limit.

So you can nominate a really (and I mean ‘really’) small independent film
with no distribution deals that was released in 2007.

Help make The Auteurs totally awesome about 2 years ago

I agree with the half-star rating system.
Half a star means the world between a 3-star film and a 4-star film.

It would also be rocking if users (maybe only some) could add films through a form with fields to fill up, a la LivingSocial, instead of us sending you guys emails with our additions, or having countless board topics stating what films you’re missing.

the form doesn’t necessarily post them live, it sends the information to staff at theauteurs who then review the entries, click on approve and publishes if they contain the correct info. If the entry is rubbish, then just discard it. If the information is okay, but there are fields for improvement, there should always be an ‘edit’ button.

How about letting add actors on lists? You know, like making a Top10 Directors, but also letting you make a list of Top10 Actors?

Well, 2008 and 2007 films are allowed for the vote if they have had distribution issues.

For example, in the instance that there’s a really great independent Canadian film that has only been seen in Canada and has taken a while to get to DVD or online would be allowed a nomination. But if you’re talking about some other film that has already been nominated for some other award and has been released in a few theaters around the world, it wouldn’t be legible.
