It’s not quite mental illness but Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was a great example of how to show an altered state of mind. And now that I think about it almost all of Terry Gilliam’s films deal with an altered state of reality.
What’s with all the 2001: A Space Odyssey hate? I love that movie and I don’t even use drugs. I think a lot of people are put off by Kubriks use of fixed camera angles for long periods of time. I find it entrancing, but I know some people think it’s boring. If you just relax and go with the flow I think you’ll find it’s really enjoyable. Again I must stress I am not on drugs.
I hate to be a dick but you need to title this post with a better question. With its current title you’re only going to get a flame war going with no good answers. May I suggest “Can a work of art be detrimental to society as well as beneficial?” or something else more specific than the current title.
the Martin Short movie “Clifford” was panned by critics, but is one of my favorite comedies of all time. It also features a thrilling (not really) performance by Charles Grodin.
Don’t you crap on Terry Gilliam kind sir. I feel his shots are always well set up and have a grand, wide open look to them. Public Enemies had the camera in too tight on the characters and consistently suffered from subpar lighting.
The limit for a theft to become a felony varies by state. In PA it’s around 2 grand. It’s much easier to steal things than most people realize. I work at a major retailer and we had a guy who stole multiple televisions over a period of two weeks. We eventually caught him, but most of the time people can just walk out of a store with unpaid merchandise and most people won’t notice.
Take away the parody label from Johnny English and it’s still a “screwball” comedy. I just used the adjective to give a description of the movie other than screwball.
It always seemed to me that Woodstock is too ensconced by nostalgia to be enjoyed as a movie. The “cultural signifigance” of the concert overshadows the performances, so that’s why I prefer Montery Pop.
The Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis performances in 12 Monkeys were very well received, with Pitt even receiving an Oscar nomination, but I found both to be underwhelming. Pitt was WAY over the top as a crazy person and Willis was very flat as a potentially crazy person.
That being said I still liked the parts of 12 Monkeys that were set in the future. They reminded me of a continuation of the dystopian future found in Brazil, maybe 50 years down the line.
I’m partial to the cameo in North by Northwest where he misses the bus at the start of the movie in the title sequence. As to the purpose of the cameos this one was meant to be funny, but in general I think he just likes to put himself in his films kind of as a running gag.
I would suggest Predator. Chicks dig the scene where Jesse Ventura gets gored. Also you may want to try one of the many Girls Gone Wild titles, and while you watch you should nudge her with your shoulder and wink suggestively.
You won’t say how much you’ve spent, but will say that you saved 200 dollars. It’s a 50% off sale, so I’m guessing you spent 200 dollars. I am a math genius.
Don’t question my math Kelvin. Let it be known that I haven taken math courses in the public school system of the United States of America. Can you thin of a better teacher than that? And don’t even try to throw coupons in the mix. A person who goes by the name of Berjuan does not use coupons.

De Niro in King of Comedy for sure. Most unexpected ending in a movie since Morgan Freeman found Gwyneth Paltrow’s head in a box.

gun fights almost 3 years ago
The second to last gunfight in Appaloosa was way short but really intense and, I imagine, faithful to how gunfights were in the old west.
And in keeping with the old west theme the last gunfight in Unforgiven when Eastwood snaps and kills everyone in the saloon was amazing.
The Punisher (the one with Thomas Jane) gets a bad rap but I love it for some reason. All the action in that was of high quality.
