Apocalypse Now almost becomes ridiculous with Col. Kildare looking for his board, with the playmates trysting it up with the boat crew, and way too much time wasted on the French colonials. The film was bordering on too long before all this was added.
And the Professional becomes silly and loses edge with Leon becoming more than a temporary foster parent/mentor.
Sorry. There are millions of us out there now. This may seem like an odd recommendation, but I’ve been on a noir fest of late and found this in my local library without knowing anything about it. “Kiss Me Deadly” (1955) directed by Robert Aldrich. I won’t say much (not to spoil) other than it is NOT a typical noir.
He knows his craft, but his choice of subject matter of late is somewhat odd. I appreciated Natural Born Killers more after watching it with making of commentary through the entire film by Stone.
Sergio Leone. Once Upon a Time in the West and Once Upon a Time in America are so underrated. Especially, Once … West. Both these films are exquisite operatic masterworks with Morricone scores.
I may play another day, but Targets is a good one. Parallel storylines that … , nah, I won’t spoil it. But, look for Karloff’s reaction to his own reflection.
These are favorites. Not in order. Number One Fav: Once Upon a Time in the West
Pontecorvo – The Battle of Algiers
Leone – Once upon a Time in the West, Once Upon a Time in America, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, For a Few Dollars More
Corbucci – The Great Silence, Django
Castellari – Keoma, Inglorious Bastards
Fellini – Il Bidone, La Strada, La Dolce Vita, 81/2
Antonioni – The Passenger, L’ Avventura
In 1954, my older brother took me to the local theater to see Creature From the Black Lagoon when I was four. It frightened me so badly, I ran out. The theater manager, and my irritated brother, tried to calm me down by telling me, “It’s only a movie.” I would have none of it. I would not go back in. I remember walking back home with my very disgusted brother.
Many years later, as an adult, I happened to catch the movie on TV. Jeez, no wonder.
