"Volver" is, at times, like that in a lot of ways. The main plot point (surprise, this character who was dead for half the movie wasn't!) is totally ridiculous, but as a viewer, you buy into it too. Almodovar is great if you're into (i'm guessing here) Hitchcock, Sirk and Fassbinder (especially the gay aspects of Fassbinder's work). "Talk to Her" is well acclaimed, but I think "All About My Mother" is the best introduction to his work. If you like those other directors, you'd probably be into it.
Rian, Rian, I can't remember if you like Almodovar, but I saw "Broken Embraces" while I was in New York City last week. INCREDIBLE. SO GOOD. MELODRAMA. See it.
I haven't seen it yet, but I'll try to track it down. I've been in another movie rut recently...surrounded by great stuff all of the time and no urge to watch it if it doesn't involve Meryl Streep.
