I’d like to introduce the book notion, for example..I love Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings magnum opus but is Tolkien’s challenging trilogy a manifesto of puzzles and deviant emotions such Paradise Lost by John Milton is (considering epics belong in multiple categories..)
I to be honest prefer both for a respective possibility of reasons..one might try to analyze Helm’s Deep battle in the most Art of War criticism he can achieve and a good female friend of mine might express her opinion that Paradise Lost “kicked ass man” and that’s all,no further evidence of why this particular piece moved her or why it’s so much better Kalevala or other epics of the genre..
Art is objective in a subjective point of view, being a person who seeks objectivity,I try to face it in any case whatsoever..the fact Terminator by Cameron is a finer motion picture than Andrei Rublev is ambivalent since both the first Terminator and Andrei Rublev are classic examples of possessive magnetism, for the on-screen film-buffs like we all are around here..the best way to accomplish this objectivity is to admire the work of art in the era where it was first created upon, regardless of the negativity of the excessive acceptance..that way,one will easily decide whether Zombie 2 by Fulci beats the horror nightmare of I Walked with a Zombie by Jacques Tourneur,2 different lavishing films but of similar concept.
So Chris, what you’re saying is that whoever is dealing with,is involved actively in the occurrence of cinema or any other artistic medium,he/she is more capable to engage in objectivity?by being “operatively” informative??
Actually, the whole concept is wrong by itself!I may never become a theatrical lecturer but at least i want to discover more about Japanese puppetry or Commedia Dell’Arte…I may never become a screenwriter or assistance editor but I will have the pleasure to explore the distances of Taiwanese New Wave or Czech Spring…and I may not fulfill my dream of becoming a philosophical researcher yet I will have learned of Averroes’ skills and Pizan’s feminist liberations..
So in the end,it’s the willingness, not the outcome of it…and look it at this way…I felt by watching L.A. Confidential a deliberate effectiveness, the movie surely showcases a supreme venture but personally,it’s not on par to other classics of the genre..on the other hand..I feel Sweet Movie is a terrific film in spite of the disgust I felt after watching it!
It’s all relative and they CAN become objective statements.
wow, man,it seems all people like Angelopoulos but…Greeks..haha :P
i love him anyhow,(being Greek, hehe)as well as EVERY SINGLE OTHER DIRECTOR AFOREMENTIONED…
i will agree with the Lives of Others statement which..well..it’s considerably inferior towards other German films,Edukators being a recent good example…
and i will disagree on the Divo and Gomorra references,2 of the greatest 2008 films BY FAR,unless some still feel Slumdog,Vicky Cristina and Milk are good offers…sigh..
i’ll also disagree on the positive statements of Tell No One and Tsotsi,i’ll jsutify a bit Tell No One because it was made by a wodnerful actor but Tsotsi is a copy of Pixote/City of God/Haine all at once!!!please…
p.s.: i feel that “foreign” seems kinda…divisional?i mean…am from Greece,so..even films from U.S.A. and England are foreign to me ;)
i hope u get my point ;)
whoever wishes to watch dubbing, including the stupidest of films, then he/she knows nothing of cinema as communication!!!
i saw The Killer by Woo in both versions, dubbing and subtitles…
i felt cheated by the English voices in Killer…
and i also felt cheated by Eastwood talking in English alone in Fistful of Dollars and the other characters dubbed…
BUT at least it was the original, let’s not forget many actors during the 70’s like with Richard Harris and Burt Lancaster who had to be dubbed because of their knowledge of Italian, haha.
i can only justify that sort of dubbing, which is inevitable..
the most explicit example in our Greek industry is Evdokia,a magnificent film which they shot it in English with Greek actors and then they dubbed it in Greek for the original version,a bit of a complexity?sure, but the dubbed form is still the original..
u’ve studied enough,hehe ;)
to sum up the Italian cinema matter…many will dislike it for the main reason Italy has gone into shreds, post 90’s that is,hehe.Amelio however and Giordana for instance and admittedly Sorrentino have reached worldwide pinnacle with their new skills.
but let’s not also forget that 2008 had many mediocre films who many considered them to be supreme e.g. Frost/Nixon and Doubt and even The Wave!!!
foreign language film term as a whole is an insult in my point of view, not to cause any ruckus around here BUT…i feel weary watching 60% of my co-citizens,people who like to rent films thinking that U.S. films are just films and when they want to refer to a Greek film,a native film for pete’s sake, they use the word Greek in a derogatory manner,as if they’re saying..oh,we’re gonna watch films (U.S.A.) not those unknown Greek films..
that’s another humiliating story from the likes of my country, but let’s leave it aside…
and that’s why i prefer film festivals contrary to award shows, even in Cesar,Goya and other country awards besides the Oscars and BAFTAS,the term foreign language is used only to award films of foreign language,to each his/her own i mean..
what’s most annoying though is that people have mostly stuck on the Oscar award of “Foreign Language Film”,which has caused a confusing term amognst the worldwide community of film,Greek people (to speak of my country) are saying Oscar films and Foreign language films, pathetic??
as a new member of the Auteurs,i must say it’s an impressive site :)

ahem, ahem, sure he is great, heck i love nearly all of the films listed here(with exceptions like Aviator and Departed, hehe),still….
we overlook the big picture and directors such are Akerman,Varda,Kiarostami,Kwon-taek,and i bet Godard could be considered a huge cinephile as well as the diseased Vertov(though for the latter, his era had yet to develop a great amount of films, hehe)
Scorsese could be voted as THE or ONE OF THE biggest U.S. cinephile/directors/critics…..
p.s.: am not a trolll :P
Tony Scott
Joel Schumacher
Ron Howard
Michael Bay(i can’t believe he’s considered an auteur)
Paul Haggis
Sidney Furie
Robert Rodriguez
John Avildsen
Michael Radford
Michael Katon-Jones
Cameron Crow
Sofia Coppola
Jason Reitman(some do like him,ouch..)
way too mainstream folks, that’s abt it for now..
anyone who thinks Godard,Kar-wai,Makavejev,Pasolini or Spielberg etc are more overrated than those guys above,he/she must have some great argument to defend his/her statement…
by the way,Lucas is more of a producer like Hughes and Demille were, yet DeMille during the silent era was considered a major auteur…..
as for Tarantino,he’s on the mediocre to plain good ones, not bollocks though..
i am from Greece,so…can i add English-spoken films too???
too European-based list but i must admit, compared to some UK/U.S. films of the last decade, especially considering what those fuckin’; award shows often pick,3/4 of this list are movies i have greatly admired,no matter how many others have been excluded, which are more or so nearly…300 plus films of the decade, hehe.difficult to name them all…
Lives of Others and Diving Bell are quite simplistic films to be honest,Volver too….and i’ll also agree that is VERY American-friendly…at least most of them belong to the quality mainstream…
but am still curious, this “foreign” business counts me in?i wanna add Young Adam, can i not????
mostly Hollywood shit(and Bollywood could answer in front of a judge’s desk, but that isn’t sooo overreacting like Hollywood is by taking matters seriously..)and of course,as many of u mentioned, the instinct of one’s ability to detect shit before watching them…
it’s amazing but the only film am curious of watching from this week’s U.S. releases for example(am checking Rotten Tomatoes at the moment)is probably Dead Snow…for the primary reason of..Nazi zombies :P not even Woody Allen’s latest films appeal to me on instantly watching them and not even a Larry David can improve that :)
The Orphanage that high??and Sea Inside looks soooo simplistic and safe…
and i love Bunuel,Oliveira and Almovodar but there’s too much of them, where is Pedro Costa or Mario Camus??
cool list but even for the Auteurs,it’s NOT representative…
thanks Kenji for compiling the results ;)
i knew of him but hadn’t noticed explicitly his paintings before observing the meticulous procession of Erice’s masterful iconography..
people rarely want to be punched in the groins in order for them to either appreciate or endure the likes of “:unknown” cinema..in Greece,it’s epidemic, even the recent famous non-English works are becoming “repulsive” to the majority of the public,i was furious to hear a lady on the rental store cursing Iwo Jima by Eastwood as am movie with “yellow people”(her words)and in spite of whatever people think Iwo Jima is,it’s insulting to condemn both older or newer non-english films as purely for cine-buffs..
so yes, this list does have mainstream picks, mostly Almodovarian relativities, hehe.and i feel glad people don’t take it for granted like many in my country do..
still…surprise is vanishing and that’s what i yearn for…the constant surprise…i’d love to see that fuckin’ critics’ poll drastically changing with NO Hitchcock,NO Bergman and NO Tarkovsky on the top 10 list, instead Jancso,Ruiz and Varda being on the first places, just for ONCE DAMMIT!!
but like with a simple Auteurs list, same old song and dance Kenji for the typical critics’ and big lists in general..
probably my pun wasn’t understandable but let’s be serious,Scorsese isn’t the only guy/gal auteur who has contributed in cinema theory,he’s just the most famous,i didn’t need Scorsese’s preservation techniques to watch Three Crowns of a Sailor nor his elaborate distinctions on Voulgaris’ cinema and i certainly didn’t need his assistance with Illumination by Zanussi or I Am Curious Yellow..
having seen all but 2 of Scorsese’s films,i prefer him much more as a director/auteur and secondary as a film critic/film observer…
hey Anonymity, since there are some members amongst here who are quite new to this site (like me :P ),i feel it’s a good opportunity for re-caps,yes? ;)
may i also add Megalexandros on those lists (why is everyone only mentioning Landscapes in the Mist???) as well as the highly underrated Barfly and the distinct Rendez-vous,oh…and a much beloved,Three Crowns of the Sailor…
few if any is a comment pointing towards to someone…if i were to say few if any have contributed to 20th century literature like Joyce did,i’d be pointing out the finger mostly on Joyce ;) and no matter how i love Joyce,i cannot deny the contribution of countless others like Beauvoir or Marquez… ;)
and cinephile is a close-by-term to cinema theory…but….hey,let’s just all hail Scorsese’s knowledge,right? ;P
Francisco,i’ll agree with Cage but…hey,u can give him a chance on Raising Arizona as the next viewer said, hehe, not because of him,but because it’s Coen Bros.,oh…and in Leaving Las Vegas being one of Figgis’ best..
and sorry to say this but u’re prejudiced against auteurs like Zeki Okten or Yilmaz Guney from Turkish cinema or Amos Gitai from Israeli cinema or even worse,Youssef Chahine from Egyptian!!!no one is gonna sue u but u need a better argument for refusing to watch cinema from 3 diverse countries…judging a country of origin is the foremost mistake of a cinephile..
Josh,i’ll not just avoid Murphy but even those catastrophic blockbusters like T4 or Land of the Lost and basically,it’s obvious what will one avoid,it’s logic sometimes and none can call us close-minded by the point we’ve already succumbed to shit in the past :P
Silence won’t be up to his best because it’s gonna be another movie “remake” like he did with Departed (and admittedly fucked up as most remakes do) but Silence is gonna be another “rendition” of a novel, yet it will never surpass one of Masahiro Shinoda’s masterpieces, the first adaption of Silence..!!!
Scorsese’s Silence will have the names and that’s how it will live up in the future…
and the reason i can’t support the notion of Scorsese as THE film viewer of directors is that during the 2000’s he has clearly fucked up in his own directorial “achievements”!even Boxcar Bertha seems a masterpiece compared to the despicable Aviator…i will grand him among the best but not THE most important auteur/cinema fan…
i saw Star Trek the other day…and i felt that even without seeing it,i wouldn’t need to shut my mouth up towards individuals who had seen it as well..i felt i wasted 2 hours of my life and i honestly admit that even without seeing it,i could have argued,u know why?because it’s experience with trash ;p
how can u possibly judge those countries from one decade?i can accept the Cage issue but that strikes me as ignorance…not only Ceylan from recent filmography but refusing to watch a country or give it another chance is like missing a portion of its cinema…ok,so Greece had one of the worst decades in the 2000’s,should i stop watching Greek films because of that??seriously…
great blockbusters have ended,Lord is one of the few exceptions that last decade which a blockbuster of that sort will hold up the test of time…Dark Knight for instance is a flare, decent one but a flare…none can beat Burton’s vision..
in short,u said u were bombed with films during a decade, yes?so…just because u were fed up for some years,it doesn’t mean u should refuse watching those countries ever again!!probably because u were pissed off by some movies or generally, the amount of movies u watched…c’mon, lame excuse for avoiding to watch great films…
at least they’re not full of heavy doze of “drama” like Nolan’s possess..Batman Begins is fine but Knight is repetitive, still better than Schumacher’s versions…in no way Burton’s Batman films are equal to Nolan’s!
damn u Josh, the only movie by Burton i haven’t watched is Pee Wee :P
Budrose,u probably haven’t seen a Godard film, stop trolling abt the same thing over and over on threads …
he does,i won’t deny it Kenji however…a best director’s award means nothing, especially when his last important films were in the early 90’s (sorry, haha) and when he’s ignored in favor of Spielberg’s and Costner’s,the Academy has long lost it,the reason i prefer Cannes and Venice nominations, the winner there is relative :)
and aye to the second argument of the first sentence, the fact that Gibson,Howard,Zemeckis and even Schaffner have received a director’s award which in a better world Teshigahara,Hitchcock,Lang,Shepitko and Wertmuller would OWN makes me question why the majority of the public loves those stupid awards…
Inland Empire is a porn film within a huge Alice in Wonderland story sprinkled with fresh vegetables, narcissism, voodoo caresses and a Russ Meyer reference and i know what is the meaning behind all this……………………Death, muahahahahahaha.
u gotta admit though that Scorsese is a better film-maker than Coppola is,hehe ;)
i will despise Scorsese(a bit, hehe)if he continues doing pointless projects like with Shutter Island,am cautious for now..he stopped being bold with Gangs..
racism is a significant factor,it’s statistics, people won’t stop watching U.S. based films as a majority,a main reason is distribution but let’s not get into that..
if Scorsese were to become president in the Oscars, does anyone think he’d drastically change them and allow more non-english spoken films to be nominated….i’d vote for a deletion of foreign film category…THE most insulting film category (even the song one doesn’t reach that insult, haha) and i believe Martin would agree with me ;)
Rent is worse than Mary Poppins Josh ;) and i haven’t seen a worse musical after seeing Mamma Mia.. :P or Enchanted…
i’ll vote for all Van Damme,Seagal,Chuck Norris and Eric Roberts(except Runaway Train)films…
probably every film with stupid East Asian copy-cat martial arts, excessive gun shooting or both at the same time, haha, like Lorenzo Lamas or Dolph Lundgren or Dudikoff…
haha,i jokingly mentioned the word bombed,in case u probably had this load of films u had to watch and after watching them u were dead exhausted, haha.
i still don’t understand ur prejudice though…i understand the avoidance of pathetic actors or particular directors’ works that u might have seen previous works of them and didn’t enjoy,or even the trailers(there are some pathetic ones,whew..)…but concerning countries as a whole????wow..that’s pretty racist to me..
haha,i’ve heard Mister Lonely is even worse… :P
i forgot to add Adam Sandler,Ben Stiller comedies on that list and the likes of David Spade,Paul Rudd and other pathetic modern “comedians”,Anna Faris,Sandra Bullock,wow..some shit i say…
Clerks(only the first one)is better than all fuckin’ Bay movies as a whole!!!!Kevin Smith however is as shitty as Bay is,slightly average..
and whoever thinks Black Orpheus is worse than Arma-fuckin-geddon doesn’t know a thing abt cinema..an insult to classical film-making..even if these 2 aren’t comparable,art-house always rules over pathetic blockbusters…
send me hate messages now :P
CAN FILM CRITICISM EVER BE OBJECTIVE? almost 4 years ago

Confidential a deliberate effectiveness, the movie surely showcases a supreme venture but personally,it’s not on par to other classics of the genre..on the other hand..I feel Sweet Movie is a terrific film in spite of the disgust I felt after watching it!

i saw Star Trek the other day…and i felt that even without seeing it,i wouldn’t need to shut my mouth up towards individuals who had seen it as well..i felt i wasted 2 hours of my life and i honestly admit that even without seeing it,i could have argued,u know why?because it’s experience with trash ;p
how can u possibly judge those countries from one decade?i can accept the Cage issue but that strikes me as ignorance…not only Ceylan from recent filmography but refusing to watch a country or give it another chance is like missing a portion of its cinema…ok,so Greece had one of the worst decades in the 2000’s,should i stop watching Greek films because of that??seriously…
great blockbusters have ended,Lord is one of the few exceptions that last decade which a blockbuster of that sort will hold up the test of time…Dark Knight for instance is a flare, decent one but a flare…none can beat Burton’s vision..

in short,u said u were bombed with films during a decade, yes?so…just because u were fed up for some years,it doesn’t mean u should refuse watching those countries ever again!!probably because u were pissed off by some movies or generally, the amount of movies u watched…c’mon, lame excuse for avoiding to watch great films…
at least they’re not full of heavy doze of “drama” like Nolan’s possess..Batman Begins is fine but Knight is repetitive, still better than Schumacher’s versions…in no way Burton’s Batman films are equal to Nolan’s!
damn u Josh, the only movie by Burton i haven’t watched is Pee Wee :P
Budrose,u probably haven’t seen a Godard film, stop trolling abt the same thing over and over on threads …

Martin Scorsese, the world's best living critic/preserver by far almost 4 years ago
he does,i won’t deny it Kenji however…a best director’s award means nothing, especially when his last important films were in the early 90’s (sorry, haha) and when he’s ignored in favor of Spielberg’s and Costner’s,the Academy has long lost it,the reason i prefer Cannes and Venice nominations, the winner there is relative :)
and aye to the second argument of the first sentence, the fact that Gibson,Howard,Zemeckis and even Schaffner have received a director’s award which in a better world Teshigahara,Hitchcock,Lang,Shepitko and Wertmuller would OWN makes me question why the majority of the public loves those stupid awards…

Contrary to popular belief... it's okay to hate Inland Empire almost 4 years ago

Ten Worst Movies You've Ever Seen? almost 4 years ago
Rent is worse than Mary Poppins Josh ;) and i haven’t seen a worse musical after seeing Mamma Mia.. :P or Enchanted…
i’ll vote for all Van Damme,Seagal,Chuck Norris and Eric Roberts(except Runaway Train)films…
probably every film with stupid East Asian copy-cat martial arts, excessive gun shooting or both at the same time, haha, like Lorenzo Lamas or Dolph Lundgren or Dudikoff…

haha,i jokingly mentioned the word bombed,in case u probably had this load of films u had to watch and after watching them u were dead exhausted, haha.
i still don’t understand ur prejudice though…i understand the avoidance of pathetic actors or particular directors’ works that u might have seen previous works of them and didn’t enjoy,or even the trailers(there are some pathetic ones,whew..)…but concerning countries as a whole????wow..that’s pretty racist to me..

completists: does it bug you having to own Armageddon? almost 4 years ago
