Do You Only Watch the Art House? almost 3 years ago

I think if you love film, you love ALL kinds of film. If you only watch Art House and make others feel bad for not watching the same movies, then you just become a miserable prick that no one likes.

Think about someone that takes themselves too seriously and can’t laugh at themselves. They usually don’t have many friends. It’s the same thing when talking about something that you love. If you’re an elitist prick, then no one will respect you. Besides, if every movie was well made, then it would become trite and bland. Sometimes that bad stuff makes you appreciate the good.

Anyway, Erick needs to get over himself and enjoy life.

The Fox and the Hound when I was about 4. My mom said I was the only kid not running around the theater making a commotion.

New to The Auteurs? You Belong Here almost 3 years ago

My name is Joe. This has become my solution to flixster. I’ve too busy to really watch many movies lately, but I have about a month off from school and I’ll probably go on a movie binge (maybe I can put a dent in all these movies I’ve bought recently).

Philogyny almost 3 years ago

I don’t think differentiating between male and female is necessarily sexist. I think ignoring the differences does more harm. Like the definition says, it’s an admiration and respect for women.

With that said, I’m going to add Jules and Jim to this list. Catherine may not be a perfect person, but she’s a real woman. She is nothing like the statue the men compare her to. She can not live up to that ideal (just like everyone). She is human and humans are imperfect.

Films that lose their impact with time, and why this should be. almost 3 years ago

Vanilla Sky. I loved it when it came out, and I watched it several times after. I watched it recently after about 4-5 years, but it didn’t have the same impact on me.

The original Halloween. Whenever I’m walking alone at night, I picture Michael Myers just standing and looking at me from nearby.

I’m about 45min north of Atlanta. They filmed Remember the Titans at a nearby high school. Right now they’re filming the Halloween sequel in another metro Atlanta suburb.

Which Movies Have You Walked Out On? almost 3 years ago

I really wanted to leave The Good Shepard, but for some reason I didn’t. I guess I feel I have to watch something all the way through to make a proper judgement on it. Also, when I pay for a movie, I feel like I’m wasting my money if I walk out.

Alfred Hitchcock - a true Auteur? almost 3 years ago

A lot of your reasoning for Hitchcock not being an Auteur is that the studio and producer had most of the control. In that case, you really can’t consider anyone from the classical Hollywood era an Auteur.

Also, is it OK for Frank Capra to have his name above his movies? It seems your arguments can apply to almost any director. No matter what, someone else is going to put their “fingers in the pie.” It’s the job of the director to work around their limitations.

I think my friend walked out around the same time you did on Ultraviolet. He didn’t pay, but I think he still wanted a refund.

Double Bill almost 3 years ago

This was the cover story in Sight and Sound a couple months ago. I’ve never been to a double feature before. It’s something that died out when I was probably to young to remember, but it’s something that just sounds like a lot of fun.

Anyway, the article had had critics, scholars, and other important people give their recomendations for a double feature they would like to see. They also wrote a little about their choices. I think this could be a fun topic to discuss here.

My choices for a double feature would be Melville’s “Bob le flambeur” and P.T. Anderson’s “Hard Eight.” I chose these for the obvious parallels between the characters in these movies. It would be cool to see basically the same characters in different situations and in different time periods.
