“Chungking Express” because it was the first movie that ever truly made me ache with love for it, there was this one shot toward the end of a woman walking and I was almost in tears at the beauty of the image.
Agreed on “Into the Wild”, right after watching it I ran around my college campus, even though it was midnight, because I just wanted to experience the outdoors.
“High Fidelity” because it expressed every feeling I’ve ever had about love with a character I still connect with on every level.
“Better Off Dead” because it made me love every 80s movie with a premise that would never work as a movie today.
The most despicable villian I have ever seen in a movie is Noah Cross from Chinatown. His lack of any regret for what he did to his daughter and his greed make him one of the greatest movies villains. But, then again he might not be a “villain” in the traditional sense, eh, he still fits the profile to me.
I have only seen Breathless, Band of Outsiders, and Alphaville, but out of those three I think I would pick either Breathless or Band of Outsiders, I’m not sure. I really want to see Pierrot le Fou and Contempt as well.
Pan’s Labyrinth
Any John Cusack comedy
The Return (thank you, Auteurs!)
Good Will Hunting
Almost Famous
The Ice Storm
Atom Egoyan’s Exotica (I’m not sure if this fits, but I’ll put it on the list anyway.)
These are pretty well-known, the Coming-of-Age genre is so broad that just about any movie where a character’s world view changes can be seen as in this genre. However, it remains one of the most endearing types of films as well.
I’ve always liked Alice in Wonderland, but I haven’t seen many animated movies from outside the US, even though I really want to.
On my to-see list:
Triplets of Belleville
Spirited Away
Ghost in the Shell
Oh! I remember I saw Akira, that was great, even if it was dubbed.
Definitely see Battle Royale, the movie has both teenage boys and girls perpetrating violence but there are more girls committing violence than the boys. Plus, it is a totally kick-ass movie, and it’s on the Autuers now. I also heard about this one called Suicide Club which I haven’t seen, but it definitely fits this category.
Okay, I’ve always thought that someone’s favorite movies tell a lot about who they really are, especially if they’re deeply interested in film. Since everyone here loves movies so much I think that this is a pretty basic topic, so here’s mine:
1. Chungking Express – Wong Kar-Wai
2. Breathless – Jean-luc Godard
3. Persona – Ingmar Bergman
4. Vertigo – Alfred Hitchcock
5. The Third Man – Carol Reed
6. Repulsion – Roman Polanski
7. Blade Runner – Ridley Scott
8. M – Fritz Lang
9. La Jetee – Chris Marker
10. Lost in Translation – Sofia Coppola
If you’ve seen all these movies you can pretty much guess that I’m a hopeless romantic, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
So what are your favorites? If you want you can expand the list to top twenty, whatever. I just did top ten because I find it really hard to choose and rank favorites if there are too many.
It would be great to see some Czech new wave like the beautifully bizarre and erotic Valerie and Her Week of Wonders. Now with the random suggestions:
Repulsion
Kieslowski’s Three Colors trilogy
F for Fake
Some more Wong Kar-Wai (As Tears Go By, Fallen Angels, etc.)
Hard Boiled and the Killer
Bergman’s Faith trilogy
The Story of Qiu Ju
My Life to Live
some Samuel Fuller movies
and Hiroshi Teshigahara
Gun Crazy
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
The Blue Kite
Fritz Lang’s Metropolis
The Bad Sleep Well
Insomnia (1997)
Bottle Rocket
Kicking and Screaming (Noah Baumbach)
Brick
Naked Lunch
Solaris
Clean, Shaven
Double Suicide
Ichi the Killer
Rififi
anything else Hitchcock
A History of Violence and other Cronenberg
Before the Rain
Ozu movies
Masculin Feminin
and these two are long shots, but I’m putting them on: High Fidelity and Dark City
Yes on Army of Darkness, and every other Evil Dead movie because they’re awesome, innovative, and totally B-movie, but also:
Chopping Mall (see it! Killer robots offing high school kids trapped in the mall!)
Tommy
Friday the 13th
Boa vs. Python (thank you, SciFi)
original King Kong (I know it’s a milestone in movies and all that, but the acting is terrible! Sample line: “Why, I think I love you!”)
Plan 9 from Outer Space (you can’t leave this off the list)
Glen or Glenda
Manos: the Hands of Fate (translation: Hands: the Hands of Fate)
Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (definitely check this out, very beautiful)
Young Mr. Lincoln
Ed Wood
American Splendor
Secret Honor
The Life and Death of Peter Sellers
The Motorcycle Diaries
I liked him in Michael Clayton, but I think he shows more potential as a director than an actor, despite Leatherheads. If he sticks to interesting stories like Confessions of a Dangerous Mind he could progress like Clint Eastwood, but don’t hold me to that.
Existential Science Fiction would definitely fit; with Solaris (I’m sure this will be in the library soon), Alphaville, Brazil, Blade Runner, La Jetee, etc. It would also be great to see a section on regions of the world often neglected in film: Eastern Europe, Africa, and the Middle East; the only one of these I can think of in the library right now is Little Terrorist. Sorry about the lack of links, but I will never understand how to do that, I’m like a senile old man when it comes to the internet.
I heard a rumor about Eyes Wide Shut, supposedly to help Cruise and Kidman better capture their characters Kubrick had them reveal all their sexual desires to him. And in the original cut Kubrick made multiple references to Cruise’s homosexuality and so Cruise threatened to sue if the film wasn’t cut. A rumor, but remember, nothing ever is just a rumor.
Never Let Me Go – Kazuo Ishiguro
All the Pretty Horses – Cormac McCarthy
Watchmen – Alan Moore
Memories of My Melancholy Whores – Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Mysteries of Pittsburgh – Michael Chabon
East of Eden – John Steinbeck
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas – Hunter S. Thompson
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay – Michael Chabon
Sandman – Neil Gaiman
Out of the books listed above I’d say All the Pretty Horses is my favorite, with Never Let Me Go and Watchmen also high up on the list. Right now I’m reading How We Are Hungry by Dave Eggers, then I’ll probably read Lolita, then Blood Meridian, Confederacy of Dunces, Life of Pi, Bruce Campbell’s Confessions of a B-Movie Actor, and a few others.
Every film is flawed, every film is flawless. I tend to enjoy “flawed” films more, but for me the perfect movie for my own personal reasons is Chungking Express because it is a film that represents everything I’ve every wanted from a movie, but never realized it until I saw this film. If I ever love a movie more then I will be suffering from never-ending Stendhal syndrome, right now that only sets in when I’m watching Chungking Express, not when I’m not watching it.
Other films I would include:
Persona – Bergman
Aguirre, the Wrath of God – Herzog
Vertigo – Hitchcock
The Third Man – Reed
M – Lang
Nights of Cabiria – Fellini
The Criterion Collection is a series of Region 1 DVDs that is a collection of the best of world and experimental cinema. I was just wondering if anyone else regularly bought titles from this company, I myself am addicted to Criterion since they offer great extras and transfers, even if they can be pretty expensive. These DVDs are a gift from god to any film nerd, although they can’t get the rights to a lot of movies I would love to see on their list like Repulsion and Persona.
My favorites from the collection:
Breathless, Pierrot le Fou, Bergman’s Faith Trilogy, The Third Man, Nights of Cabiria, and M
Many of these also being my favorite films.
I haven’t seen the movie nor read the book of Wonder Boys, but I really enjoy Chabon’s work so I’ll probably get to it eventually. Have you read other Joyce works? I would like to read his work and want to know which would be the best for a first timer.
Oh my God, Chungking Express! Oh my God, oh my god, ohmygod, ohmahgawd! This makes me really happy, looks like I need a blue-ray player NOW! I have been waiting for a Criterion release of this, the DVD now has a horible cover, the description on the back is atrocious and the picture quality isn’t very good. A Criterion edition of CE, this my event of the decade. Now if only they could get their hands on Persona, Repulsion, and Vertigo!
