Even thou this site is mostly for films, i decided to open a debate about a show that deserves to have it’s own topic. The office (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0386676/) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290978/) TV show that really takes you in. In my opinion its the best show ever done and most of the characters are acted brilliantly.
So do you watch this show, and which one do you prefer, us or uk version?
I started to watch us version and after finishing all the episodes tried to go also to uk version but i think once you fell into one version is really hard to watch second.
It is one of the smallest countries in central Europe but we have had some quite good films done in the past and some just recently. If i point out few that i saw and that they left deeper remark and would really suggest them to all independent movie lovers…
probably the best Slovenian film by my humble opinion is
SPARE PARTS (Rezervni deli); director: Damjan Kozole; 2003 or also
NO MANS LAND; Denis Tanovic; 2001 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0283509) probabily the most known Slovenian film,
Others also worth mentioning follow;
OUTSIDER (Outsider); Andrej Kosak; 1997
BENEATH HER WINDOW (Pod njenim oknom); Metod Pevec; 2003)
FUCK IT (Jebiga); Miha Hocevar; 2000; but the thing with this film is that it’s probably ten times more funny for us that speaks Slovenian language, because there are some phrases that are just untranslatable. But still very funny movie.
CHEESE AND JAM (Kajmak in marmelada); Branko Djuric (2003)
GUARDIAN OF THE FRONTIER (Varuh meje); Maja Weiss (2002)
and two new films from this year that i haven’t seen yet but both have interesting plots;
9:06 (9:06) Igor Sterk; 2009
SLOVENIAN GIRL (slovenka); Damjan Kozole (2009)
For sure i forgot some also very good films that i can’t recall at the moment but if i remember will write them.
Hope some of you will check some of the films and express their opinion about our cinematography…
Well i dont deny that some good stuff was made before 90s (in fact, there was some good shit done like Dont cry, Peter (Ne joci, Peter) from Stiglic in the year 64 which is great film about war and hope and also classic Slovenian comedy Real Pests! (To so gadi) from 77) and surly lots more like already Bobby explained with more details) but i was just presenting from my head more recent films, that stayed in my mind and also wrote that it was random selection and that i didn’t put a lot of research into it. But i will put myself one day to it and present more chronologically the Slovenian cinematography. And also if i apply to Dimitris post, yes we cannot or can, thing of interpretation, rely on collaborations amongst all the nations in cinematography of all countries. I still think the best films were made with use of talents of all Yugoslavia (Outsider, No mans land…). And also agreed, by my opinion, that Serbian cinematography, is the strongest and has put out many great films for Europe as for former Yugoslavia.
I agree with all being written and also i wasn’t trying to dicard your facts (witch stands) but i just, as i mentioned before, exampled out only couple of them, the list of Yugoslavian films before it’s dissolution and after also is huge, and maybe if my time will let me one day i will publish more fact supported list of those.
If the message will be reached, through all the not so beautiful images in some parts of the film, it has every chance to become a masterpiece. The obesity and overeating are minor things to put out, when talking about this film. At first part of the film it’s nicely presented the relationship in communist country, between superior and his “followers”. The camera for my taste was the best in first part, specially the scene with “usage” of the bathtub. It’s also beautiful seen the lust for unreachable, even if it is on the basic of sexuality. Man has to dream about something, nobody can take him that away. Second part, was for my opinion the “cheapest” part in the film, cause i didn’t recognize anything else than a dream (which apparently grew from former generation) for success. To go to Olympics, but Kalaman didn’t had luck, cause, it was era when this “sport” was not so popular. But his joy and big expectations probably returned at his son’s birth, and here is where the third part begin, and for me it’s by far the best, cause Kalaman, saw himself in his son. He was the one, to take the family name to the glory that his mother and father deserved. But the luck wasn’t on his side. Lajos “picked up” his genes somewhere else, grandfather (who was relatively skinny) probably. Kalaman received unpleasant surprise, but not at his birth, but later, with Lajos’s youth. He was never to be a quick eater, he became a taxidermist. And here the film starts to live. It opens a deep family social disturbance, the question of father/son expectations, and the strange way of grief for not raising the “world champion”. But Kalaman had put all his hopes into his new “to be champion”. Cats. Cats, who later show him little different respect than his “failed hope” son did. Lajos also didn’t had easy life. He was rejected on every corner, he was loner, but he had animals. He was god for them. He gave them another life, not so much “livable” but still, his hands put animals into so called second esthetic living. But his time came after his life. He becomes an artifact. He became bigger than ancient Romans, bigger than ancient Greeks, he was so called "living artifact. Did anybody loose in this film? Did anybody actually won? Audience won for sure!
Lovely piece. Brilliant message.
Both are just fricking masterpieces, but No country just had something more to it for my taste. Eventhoug the Paul Dano in TWBB was fucking amazing, but than again, Bardem also in No country.
Bad acting, story could have been great, but it was just to jumpy, to quick. It didnt push the characters and it doesnt drag you in as a wiever. Too bad, cause it could have been a great piece.
The Anarchist Cookbook; 1/10
This is really just a bunch of crap wanted to be presented as an ideology. Before you go and shoot a movie with this kind of content you should read some books about it, discover the backgrounds, the influences, not just imagine what Anarchy probably is and shoot a movie about some screwed up youth, that thinks anarchy is just some wonderland with no government, no police, no state of mind actually. I am not a some sort of political activist or something but i know much better, that every self called anarchist is trying to get rid of the reputation that this movie gave. It is really a waste of time, and for true anarchist it is an insult!
Yes, Josef Odgroba Dogroba is very good film, but just recently i saw Poker from Anzlovar from 2001 and it’s fricking good movie. If the main actor was anybody else than Veseljko, this would have been my alltime slovenian favorite, but he didt play very good and quite ruin some of the good scenes for my taste. But it is a very good film. I will also try to put myself on Slovenka and 9:06 and comment, but i dont have a lot of time now, so we will see. Slovenka will probabily be soon on DVD i think.
