Giovanni Colantonio: Filmography

Detachment

Has it's heart in the right place and offers an interesting, well-rounded view of the education system. But it's a stylistic nightmare, with some of the oddest aesthetic decisions I've ever seen. It just ends up disjointed and overloaded with underdeveloped character and plot threads.

The Green Hornet

This is an brilliant work of satire on the current state of Hollywood cinema, and "coolness." It was really at around the time that the "heroes" start using door guns that it really hit me. That's something that would seriously happen in a major action movie and would be seen as "badass" or cool. Gondry's playing with that, making it apparent how ridiculous viewing action movies like that really is. Meta-brilliance.

Anything Else

Completely, criminally underrated. I can understand why people might be upset over his recycling, but that's what Woody Allen has always done. And he does it well rather consistently. He does what he does best here, and does a great job at aiming it towards a younger generation. He wants young people to hear what he's saying too, and he does it quite literally in it. And really well cast in my opinion. Jason Biggs handles the Allen type character really well. His monologuing is a little stiff, but otherwise he feels natural, and not like someone doing a Woody Allen impression, which some of his films unfortunately run into. Probably his strongest work of the 2000's for me.

Anything Else
Adam and Steve Pulaski like this

Abysmal. Absolutely abysmal. I must say that this encapsulates everything that is wrong with video game adaptations. A good, fun game translates to a mess of an action movie on screen. Incomprehensible editing, breakneck pacing, meaningless cinematography, stale acting, inane writing.... etc. There's just an utter lack of directorial presence in the film. It feels like he did nothing to direct it. Abysmal.

Daybreakers

It's as if someone said "Man, Twilight has been making vampires into sissies. I need to make something to make them cool and scary again. And really violent. Like, they'll EXPLODE when they get staked." And that person was just as inept as the people he set out to outdo. The result is an utter mess. Fun at times, but on the whole just another forgettable entry in the latest vampire craze.

Definitely need some more of his films listed up here. Einstein is an absolute genius.

The Wages of Fear

Though it takes quite a while to pick up, the film builds up to one of the most tense experiences ever filmed. Every moment, I was expecting the worst for the situations. I was truly on the edge of my seat, waiting to see how these characters could overcome such massive and seemingly impossible odds.

Schizopolis

Obvious joke review referencing notable part of the film. But really, how does one review this? It's an experience. Hilarious, mind-boggling, but very surprisingly thought provoking. The kind of film that will gain equal parts praise and harsh criticism. You've got to watch it to decide which side you fall on, but personally, I enjoyed it to no end!

Ashes and Diamonds

Ashes and Diamonds starts and ends very strongly. But the middle doesn't really hold up to the quality set in the opening minutes. Nevertheless, it's got great moments in that space. And even when things are slow, the beautiful cinematography really helps move it along. A solid film all in all.

Ashes and Diamonds

It's got a slow build, but it evens out to a fantastic climax. It all really pays off. Not that the time up until then is wasted of course. Even without the last few scenes, the film is a really well balanced mix of comedy, drama, and great characterization.

George Washington

A wonderfully serene film that (For the most part) just feels real. It's so hard to make a film that genuinely feels so close to our universe, but George Washington really nails that. It's just so easy to get lost in the summer haze with the characters.

Pygmalion

A simple, but classic story fueled by sharp wit, a great sense of humor, and a massive heart. Really the shining example of a 'charming' film.
