The Kinks “Powerman” in Darjeeling Ltd, Beck “Everybody’s gotta learn sometime” in Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind, Cranberries “Dreams” in Chungking Express, “Cuccuruccu Paloma” in Talk to Her……………..
i have studied physics, chemistry, biology, math, computer science, politics, history, literature, film appreciation, photography and vague ass journalism…worked my ass off past 3 yrs in television, dead beat and bored nuts, wanna do things i couldnt do earlier….and study, write, watch, film film films! but education is way too expensive……
For me it was, “Central Station” by Walter Salles….which was shown to me in a culture studies class…..it just struck me deep inside….and i really started looking at cinema more closely and with more respect after i completed that credit. and then Hitchcock too…..and Requiem for a dream…..and …‘the good, the bad and the ugly’
hey all, im from new delhi, india……really looking fwd to watching these films and voting….what an awesome list for the competition! i havent seen or heard of many on this list….so it should be a gud learning experience too. talking bout countries…..there’s a punjabi/urdu language film called ‘Khamosh Paani’ or Silent Waters (2003)……hm dont kno how you go about including or selecting films…..but just felt like mentioning it…..as a fine example of a film transcending boundaries……its made a pakistani woman but is a french/german production and has some indian actors.
most of hrishikesh mujherjee and basu chatterjee’s films….are real fun comdedies… based on middle-class indian lives in the 70’s and 80’s. my favs from hrishi-da wud be: Golmaal, Chupke Chupke, Bawarchi, Anand, Guddi, Khoobsurat, Rang Birangi….
basu c -Byomkesh Bakshi (TV), Khatta Meetha, Rajnigandha, Baton Baton Mein, Choti si baat. they – along with actors like Amol Palekar, Deepti Naval etc. ushered in a style that was different from mainstream bollywood and the ‘parallel or new wave’ directors.
the way films are made…the process essentially is a lie…but its used to communicate a “truth” or a point of view of the writer/director. sometimes we may identify with it as our truth or a reflection of what we have felt…..we are mostly ready to suspend our disbelief….but sometimes if i end up watching a sappy hollywoodmovie….i ask myself…why the hell am i letting this lie get to me…am i really feeling entertained? but there are times while watching a film, i say “yaaaaaaaa i kno what u mean”. that’s truth i think.
my first herzog film was aguirre. it really made me feel the man’s madness….and after that i saw his latest docu encounters at the of the world….which i found to be brilliant. and ever since ive watched grizzly man, even dwarfs started small and enigma of kasper…can’t wait to watch the rest of his stuff…..even dwarfs……was crazy. cudnt stop thinkin bout them dwarfs 4 some time.
i had a dream once….where a giesha like woman…with long black hair, pale skin and a red kimono was chasing me…umm she wasnt on ground….but floating in the air…a little above ground level…….she chased me for quite some time while i ran ran ran ran ran ran……
@cinesnag: ouch! yeah, ur almost right there…..i guess we do lack in preserving our heritage (not just film)….and sometimes it gets too late. but no, the national film archives here have done a good job of restoring prints….
I think the finer nuances of a language also play a role here. Being Indian, and not knowing Bengali very well, I sometimes wish I was more fluent in it so that I could appreciate Ray and other Bengali films more. Same goes for the Urdu language…..the subtleties involved here make a big difference when i sometimes read english subtitles of Indian films…..but that does not mean that Im not awed or fail to understand the film…be it from any country, for the language of cinema is universal. Infact it gives me a chance to explore and know something more about cultures all over the world.
