‘This Film Is Not Yet Rated’ — A documentary about the MPAA’s film rating system and the people behind the job. It’s amusing and informative, which is always a good combo. Although far from being deep or socially critical to view, I was enraptured through the entire thing and it really makes one look at ratings differently (for those who even bother to look at them in the first place). However, it is incredibly sexually graphic amidst proving the point of the film, hence, the film is not rated.
It makes me very happy to have seen 300, Moulin Rouge, Dirty Dancing, and The Postman mentioned previously… however, Transformers… really? Hm. I completely understand (although don’t agree with because I’m a sucker for everything comic-book-related even if it isn’t done justice) the disapproval or disappointment in it or even thinking it just plain is not good, but the TOP 10 WORST EVER? I think absolutely not… you must only watch very tolerable movies. Apologies.
I would also like to add Tank Girl, Day of the Triffids, and Quest for Fire (I genuinely tried to see the supposed “genius” in that one, but…. no).
“Also those “Pirates of the carriebean” movies sucked. Even more so since they became so popular. "
I just ran across that and it made me think of this thread. What a pity… every once and a while things become popular and mainstream because they actually are wonderful. Too bad people like that will be missing out on such. Maybe we could all just use our own brains..?
I agree with the very early comment that the quote is far too general… what is “easy” anyway?
Indeed, a movie such as Transformers GENERALLY takes much more technical man power than an “art” film… also meaning though, that it takes more people to make it (again, generally) which makes it more impersonal.
However, an “art” film for the most part is created to revolve around its depth and concept… meant to connect with the viewer and evoke feelings from the viewer immediately but also in the long run (MUCH more difficult in the sense of one’s ability to think and prepare as opposed to one’s ability to edit animated robots), just like a truly great painting is meant to do (although I’m hesitant to say that because it is so hugely debated, but I’ll say it none the less).
Michael Bay makes a movie with the primary goal of keeping someone entertained for an hour and forty minutes without the viewer really needing to think. Strictly immediate entertainment.
So, when you take a person’s brain out of the picture, yes, it would seem it is easier to make an “art” film because Michael Bay’s movies mostly just replace a brain with a computer to do everything.
It makes sense in my head… not sure how well I did trying to convey it otherwise, though, sorry.
(Sorry to put a break in the game and sorry if this was previously mentioned, but I feel the need to point out that ‘conversate’ is not a word… it really bothers me that it was used. It’s ‘converse’.)
“I usually only buy films I love and know will watch multiple times.”
I always think it’s interesting (although not illogical) when people say things of that sort.
I have probably shyly over 100 DVDs that I have purchased, and maybe… 5 of them had I seen before buying. I very rarely buy a movie I have already seen. I’d rather broaden my horizons… and I work at Barnes & Noble with the CDs/DVDs so it’s cheaper for me than most to do so.
Haha, no. It means that I get a discount because I’m an employee. :)
I usually won’t pay more than 10 or 15 dollars for a movie I haven’t seen… possibly a bit more if it has been highly recommended to me by someone whose taste in movies I trust or I am incredibly intrigued by its synopsis. Don’t get me wrong though, I own some unbelievably atrocious excuses for movies because of this, but it’s fun sometimes to be able to lend one to a friend and say “watch this, you’ll love it”… because I’m a terrible person. Then when they say “you were right, it was great” I end said friendship. Hah.
I really should rent DVDs… it makes so much more sense. However, with my job being so dull and I have to just stand around for hours on end looking at movies, most people don’t realize how incredibly hard it is to not buy them. It’s a curse, really. I have recently taken a liking to the library’s movies though, which are FREE! Huzzah!
Usually (with the B&N I work for at least) they want you to be 18, however, I was hired when I was 17… I think it’s becoming more common now to be hired there at 16. Although, some may have been 16 all along. Not entirely certain.
Employee discount for books is 30 percent, CDs/DVDs is 20 percent, but every once in awhile there will be a few weeks where they’ll throw an extra 10 percent onto each.
…and although this has nothing to do with being an employee, they are doing the buy 2 DVDs get the 3rd free thing right now. Kill me. I’m so weak.
This sounds very familiar.
I’ll admit, I stopped reading about halfway through because my attention span isn’t so wonderful, but I must say that I completely agree with everything from the INSANELY (I would put more emphasis on that word if I could) overused comic relief/stupidity to the illogical and completely fractured plot. Not to mention, during the scenes with all the action (what he’s most likely to get credit for, if anything) were pointless because you couldn’t even tell the decepticons from the autobots in this one.. it was just an enormous jumble of movement. It was indescribably worse than the first, in my opinion… and for those of you who couldn’t stand the first one even a little bit… just… wow. It’s really really really not good.
Oh, and the part where Shia Labeouf’s character dies (sorry if I’m ruining this precious sequence for anyone) and Optimus Prime’s ancestors talk to him in the purgatory-like place and tell him he can’t die because he hasn’t finished blah blah blah. I actually had to turn to the person I was with and say “are you kidding me?”
When I walked out of the theater, there was a huge line of people waiting to go in for the next showing. I just shook my head to them.
All the discussion of Transformers makes me wonder what everyone on here thinks about the new Star Trek (just along the lines of things currently remade and in theaters)… but I think I’m afraid to ask.
I must just be so much more pessimistic and whiny than everyone else here…
often times I seek things out knowing I probably or definitely won’t like them… but seeing them gives me something to add to my intangible “things that are wrong with the world” list, and gives me the chance to tell everyone who does like it why they’re wrong… and also, if I happen to like something I assume I will hate, well… then I liked it! In this case… no. May have not even been worth the arrogance ammo this time, but you never know until you try.
@Fredo— Glad to hear that decent opinion of it at least. I loved it, but I’m much less of a pedant than most of you all (so it seems at least).
@RawDealBuffy— I like the first one fine, thank you very much.
I agree whole-heartedly with the lack of creativity… it’s sad that, honestly, thinking back on all the movies that have been in theaters recently… none of them are original concepts… except maybe Up… and a few other kids movies… hm.. that’s odd. The original Day the Earth Stood Still is one of my favorite movies of all time and.. seriously? I mean, seriously? It needn’t be adapted. Let the rest of my generation be oblivious to its greatness instead of trying to make it suit them and their desperate need for things to explode.
However, I must say that, as mad as remaking good movies makes me, it makes me more mad when it is instead, a good book.
Ew. First of all, is there really a point to criterion Blu-rays? I think not. The films released within the criterion collection are already practically the Blu-ray of DVDs… they claim to have been visually and audibly enhanced (part of why they are pricey). I can’t imagine the difference is great. This should also be apparent considering the fact that a Blu-ray priced criterion collection film is the exact price of the same DVD, however, the Blu-ray price of any other movie is SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive than the DVD of the same movie.
I mean… honestly, I think the Blu-ray just makes everything TOO realistic. It bothers me a ton. It makes it look like everything is trying to look like a documentary and in some cases it hinders the computer-generated affects, which ultimately makes the film LESS enjoyable.
Lastly, who was watching a DVD three years ago thinking, “gee, if only I could see his sweat and hear the footsteps of the guy in the far left corner my experience with this movie would be so much better”. I hope no one. Seriously people, they are just going to keep pretending it isn’t good enough every few years. Stop giving in to their shit.
