What about “Cul-de-Sac” (GB/1966) ??…..It happens to be one of of my favorite ever. It’s a crazy, humourus, absurd, very well done “fim noir” parody by Polansky, with great Françoise Dorléac, Donald Pleasence, Lionel Stander …
Another one, just for the fun is “What” (1973), because I think it reflects Roman’s way of life in the 70’s, with Marcello Mastroianni “en roue libre”, a crazy film, a sort of transposition of Alice in Wonder(sex)land.
I’ ve bought his Macbeth dvd few days ago, but haven’t seen it yet (according to British cinephilians it’s a very good film….)
I enjoyed very much “The 9th Gate”, very well done even if the end is a little bit “too much”; Frank Langella is a real good villain and a great actor….
- Françoise Dorléac and Donald Pleasence are married and live isolated in a manor situated on a small Scottish island with lots of chikens (and lots of eggs by the way)
- There is a road conducting to the island which you can only access when the tide is low
- By this road comes a car with two gangsters in, who have done a bank robbery, Lionel Stander and Jack Mc Gowran. Mc Gowran is badly hurt by a bullet
- Stander leaves the car to get some help and intends to join his “boss”, following the telephone lines going to the manor
- The tide is getting high
……. la suite est dans le film.
John Huston is one of my favorite director ever, for ====> Key Largo, The Man Who Would Be King, Night of the Iguana, Under the Volcano (wonderful Albert Finney !!), Wise Blood, Beat the Devil ( an “unwedged” and very humourus film noir ), Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Asphalt Jungle (which certainly inspired Kubrick for “The Killing”), Moby Dick, Heaven Knows Mr Allison ( I love this one ), Reflections in a Golden Eye, Fat City.
Avanti !! ….for me too, an underated Wilder IMO, Jack Lemmon and Juliet Mills are a marvelous couple, and don’t forget the talented Clive Revill ( by the way, was he an American or a British ?? )
“Goodfellas” always picks me up because it’s one of my Top Ten favourites ever and it’s black humoured; those kind of things always “work” for me….I tried Dysney, but it didn’t do it.
" Philadelphia Story" also, if it should be only for the marvelous “pool scene”; as Lubitsch is my favourite director ever, I would say “To Be Or Not To Be”, “Cluny Brown”, “Trouble in Paradise”, “Angel”, “Ninotchka”, “That Uncertain Feeling” ……
Il est véritablement scandaleux que PROVIDENCE ne soit toujours pas édité en dvd !!!!
This is not a “weird” film, maybe if you want to “classify” it, it’s a surrealistic film about the creation process, but this would be a very reducting resume of this gem…..
In France, other Alain Resnais movies are available ( Mon Oncle d’Amérique, Smoking / No Smoking, La Vie Est Un Roman, Pas Sur La Bouche….etc ) but not this one, it’s a real shame !!
Like Bobby, I still wait very much for this.
“The more you wait, the best things are” says the proverb, but there are limits to one’s patience; who owns the copyrights ??
I’m thinking about writting a letter to A.Resnais to ask him about this….if I can find his address somewhere (ha ha)
Chris Marker is to be pronounced as if it was English
- Godard = Go + dar ( pronounce “a” like in Art )
- Rohmer = Ro ( “o” like in “go” ); mer = is to be pronounced “ère” ( if you have a French dictionary )
- Rivette = Ri ( like the “ri” of “river” ); vette ( like “vet” of “veteran” )
- Varda = pronounce the “a” like in “ham” ( if you’ve seen S.Frears “The Queen” !! )
-Demy = “e” is pronounced as the “eu” letters association in French, no equivalent in English I think; “y” is like the “i” of CINEMA …..
I saw on French TV, a film done by Samuel Fuller, when he was with the U.S Army in 1945-46 to “liberate” a concentration camp in Czechoslovakia, it’s a documentary in fact, I got it on vhs somewhere, but I don’t remember the tittle….
It’s a powerfull film, the American commander “forced” the native civil people who lived near the camp, to come and see what the Nazi had done, and obliged them to bury the bodies. As those civilians said that they didn’t know what was happening there.
This film’s got a real dramatic tension.
" A significant role for me ?? Seems to be — now !! Charles [Laughton] called me up:’ I’ve a book here about a thoroughly unredeemable shit. ’ And I said: ’ Present !! ’
