As a new guy here, too, I have to admit to being a bit baffled by the “Stop the Lists” thread as well initially. But, eh, I got over it and just moved along to other threads (nothing to see there). =)
Romero had one of the first actual (and at the time very controversial) graphic “exploding head” shots in DAWN OF THE DEAD (courtesy of Tom Savini), which opened in Europe in ’78 and the US in early ’79. Definitely pre-dated the famous SCANNERS (1981) one at any rate.
Not a big fan of his source material/subject choices in recent years and personally, haven’t really been feeling Cronenberg since SCANNERS in ’81 (though, yes, THE FLY remake I tend to leave on in the background if I happen across it on TV, and I do sort of dig THE DEAD ZONE a little bit with the passing years).
But yeah, I miss the raw ’70s Cronenberg. Then again, I say the same thing about Romero, too.
But hey, that’s probably just me, I don’t know. I’m kind of dyed-in-the-wool old school when it comes to my non-mainstream genre tastes—not that Cronenberg’s really all that much of a “genre” director anymore anyway, which, I guess, is why I miss the old Cronenberg. :)
Edit: Alexander – maybe you were referring to the Romero part above? Not sure now.
soybean: Ha, nope, we just happen to have the same last name, lol (though we do follow each other). Actually, GM’s what I go by on some other sites, too. Been using it for years.
I’m a huge horror fan, so I tend to re-listen to the various release commentaries for a few of my favorite horror films over and over (all the originals, btw, no yucky remakes); NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, DAWN OF THE DEAD, PHANTASM and THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE. Those commentaries are endlessly fascinating to me—due in large part to my extreme, lifelong obsession with those particular movies.
I also enjoy re-listening to any of Sir Christopher Frayling’s Leone/spaghetti western commentaries, and the great Universal Horror ones by David Sklar. All eminently re-playable! I’ve also enjoyed the A CLOCKWORK ORANGE and 2001 commentaries more than once each, too.
- The ending of LOCAL HERO. True heartache.
- Like others, of course, the ending of CITY LIGHTS.
- Chaplin/Coogan’s separation & later reunion in THE KID.
- When Maximus (Russell Crowe) returns to his farm in GLADIATOR.
- It’s fair to say I was devastated and wanted to cry at the ending of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968) the first time I saw it when I was a kid. It was the first film ending to blow my fragile little mind.
THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT (1972) messed me up pretty good many years ago. Oh, and all those FACES OF DEATH type films (which I refuse to go anywhere near anymore).
Haven’t seen any of the current crop of well known “disturbing” films (not even the SAWs or HOSTELs). Just not a fan of the mindless torture/gross-out flicks. I don’t mind gore at all, just not into the whole human-torture-in-excruciating-detail stuff, so I don’t see any of those.
Note: Steve Steinbach submitted this one some weeks back, but didn’t include photos. Since it’s one of my favorites, I’m re-submitting with screens, hoping it helps the cause. =)
@Augusto A.: Oh yeah, but it’s all good, though. The more (cool) films that get added the better! Just groovy that we were on the same wavelength there. =)
Just copying this one over here since I posted it this morning (yesterday now) in the June thread, stupidly, instead of waiting a few hours for the July one to go up. Now it’s bugging me so I figured I’d move it here, as it were, to keep things more organized and official. :)

@Augusto A.: Ha, I was literally just now (per my post yesterday on Bob Clark’s page) coming here to submit DEAD OF NIGHT! :D
But anyway, thanks for doing it. I really dig that movie and hope it gets added (uh… after CSPWDT, of course, heh).
