Getting to see one of the restorations of Lang’s “Metropolis” on the big screen . . . there’s something really special about seeing classics at the theater.
I don’t know if I can come up with ten, but the only movies I’ve ever walked out of the theater while the movie was still playing are “Waterworld” (I’ve since seen the whole thing – TERRIBLE), “The Net” (still haven’t seen the whole thing), and “Screamers” (with Peter Weller – I’ve since seen the whole thing and it’s so terrible, it’s hilarious).
Although now that I think about it, I guess I’ve also seen Highlander 2, Cannibal Campout, every Steven Seagal movie, and Terminator 3. Man, there’s just a lot of junk out there.
Based strictly on the film and availability of said film. I’ve got quite a few movies that I’d be surprised to see get any sort of “special feature” treatment.
Hopper has done a couple of other films, too. I remember “The Hot Spot” with Don Johnson(!), Virginia Madsen, and Jennifer Connelly. Hopper doesn’t appear in it, but he made a dumb-but-fun neo-noir with that one.
I know it’s been months since anybody posted on this thread, but I’m a HUGE Anthony Mann western fan, and I’m relatively new to this site, so I just wanted to throw my two cents in.
For me, The Man from Laramie is his best overall western. I got really into the story, it was told well, it’s one of my favorite James Stewart performances . . . it’s the one where everything really came together. That said, I thought Man of the West was his best directing job, and actually would have easily been his best overall, but I thought Gary Cooper was badly miscast in the lead. The Naked Spur would also go into a “Mann’s Top 3” because it’s such a great set-up – lots of psychological warfare being thrown around between the leads, good ending, just a really fun watch.
1. Queen Christina
2. The Public Enemy
3. Alexander Nevsky
4. A Night at the Opera
5. Une Partie De Campagne
6. Le Jour Se Leve
7. I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang
8. The Blue Angel
9. L’Age D’or
10. Footlight Parade (not that I think it’s a better movie than “M”, I just wanted to throw it out there)
Mon Oncle is my favorite Tati. The garden party scene just about puts me on the floor every time I see it, I’m laughing so hard. Of course, Playtime does have the restaurant scene . . . still gotta go with Mon Oncle.
Watched Yol last night . . . gotta give it an 8 out of 10. Good movie, loved the storyline involving the Seyit character, was kind of lukewarm to the Memet story, didn’t like the Omer story, but I really enjoyed the subtext.
Also watched Red Psalm last night . . . I’ll go 7 out of 10, if only because I’m not sure I understood enough of it. Liked what I got, though.
Alien is a great film. I loved the whole haunted house in space feel, the claustrophobia of it all, and the Dallas character played by Tom Skerritt. Considering it’s an older film than Aliens, it doesn’t feel nearly as dated (although the computer sound effects are hilarious).
Aliens . . . where do I start. It’s good, but not great. It is a solid action film with a matronly twist and it delivers in a spectacle sort of way. My problem with it is the same problem I have now going back and rewatching something like Raiders of the Lost Ark. It seems like I built it up in my mind to be better than it actually was. In the two times I’ve seen Aliens in the last few years, I’ve groaned when Ripley starts fighting the queen in that loader machine thing. Alien is, to me, a great film, and Aliens is a solid sequel, but it doesn’t really compare to the original.
I’d heard of it, but I just watched Kes. It was significantly deeper than I expected. I don’t know if it was great, but I was so surprised by it, I’d have to say it was at least as good as anything else I’ve watched this month.
My wife was scrolling through the cable listings for movies the other night and came across a movie on the Lifetime Movie Network (no, I don’t watch that channel, nor was it under consideration to watch this channel) where the description said something about how the dad was played by Lance Henriksen and the daughter was played by Jennie Garth. Is that even possible? I admit, I’m not much of a student of science or biology or genetics, but could somebody like Lance Henriksen, no matter who he could have mated with, ever spawn somebody who looked like Jennie Garth?
Whoever said Salo, I agree with that. That way people will stop saying fake nice things about me and leave remembering me for the a-hole I really am most of the time.
I buy, I rent . . . whatever seems appropriate at the time. If I can rent it, I usually do. If events conspire against that happening, I have zero problem buying a movie without having ever seen it before.
I got a copy of Walsh’s “Me and My Gal” from 1932 not that long ago. Still haven’t watched it . . . Really liked Thief of Bagdad, thought High Sierra was decent but not great (I still don’t get what was up with Pard the Death Omen Dog, what a strange idea to put in that movie), but White Heat as many people have posted above, that’s just awesome.
There are all sorts of film I love, especially older French films, but I’ve got to say, my absolute favorite director of all time, Ritwik Ghatak, is Indian, and his movies really hit home with me, so I’m going India.
For me, probably somewhere between 10-15. Let’s see
Ran
Letter From An Unknown Woman
Brief Encounter
Sunrise
In The Mood For Love
On The Waterfront
The Godfather I & II (that really should be considered one movie)
Meghe Dhaka Tara
Last Year In Marienbad
The Passion of Joan of Arc
Une Partie De Campagne
Rebecca
And I just watched A City of Sadness by Hsiao-hsien Hou. Still taking time to let it float around in my head, but my immediate reaction was that it would also fall in this category.
I just recently watched "If . . . " coincidentally. I liked it a lot, too. Maybe not quite as much as you did, but I definitely enjoyed myself.
Very exciting . . . I’ve got my movies picked out and ready to go. Filmbot, Dimitris – DENMARK IS COMING FOR YOU. Kenji – not so much. Not that I’m throwing in the towel or anything there, but I know I might be sunk before I start against Japan. Now I just need to decide if I’m giving up enough to use “Smilla’s Sense of Snow”.
This is not even a joke . . . an ex-girlfriend and I went to see Nolan’s Insomnia at about 11:30 at night when it was in theaters. Yes, folks, I fell asleep during Insomnia.

Fincher’s “The Game”? Most incredibly stupid ending ever. No amount of references to other films can make it any better.
