The Pixar Touch is a great new book chronicling the creation and success of Pixar up till about the release of Cars. Great read, especially if you love Pixar, like I do.
If you think that Slumdog was a hollow and dumb movie, obviously you weren’t catching on to the theme of the film. This theme is that escapism is a necessary part of life, something that provides entertainment and helps us survive, however, escapism isn’t life it is a much dramatized version of it. And never, anywhere, did Slumdog advertise to be a documentary about the slums of India. It was beautifully shot, made you care about the characters and had a fresh, interesting theme and conveyed it with much control and focus (which is the point of art anyway, to be beautiful, evoke emotions and make you care and reveal something about the human experience, Slumdog had all three)
The term I use for ‘subject’ is topic. It is an element of life that the peice explores (ex. Love, leadership, anger etc.) I agree with your definition of theme and it’s seperation from topic, the theme is what the price is revealing about the human experience (ex. I believe that the theme of The Lion King is that one cannot escape their predestined fate, no matter how hard one tries). I believe that auteurs should be aware of this theme throughout the entire production, that is the role of the artist and I believe that film is no different.
Fredo,
I was taught many, many, many times that Theme absolutely cannot be summed up in one word. This, again, would be a topic. The theme is the idea, message, or lesson that is conveyed by a work. The message may be about life, society, or human nature or, what the piece of art is revealing about the human experience. This is the point of art, to express yourself by giving insight into the human condition. Otherwise, what is the point of film or any other art for that matter?
Your mention of the topic loss is a very good example of a topic. It is something that many people relate to and this can be very handy for hooking people in the story. However, what is the piece saying about loss? Is it saying that when one experiences loss, they can use it to become stronger? Or is it saying that intense loss leads to self-destruction?

Criterion Movies suitable for the whole family almost 3 years ago
If you don’t want any nudity in the films to show to your family, don’t show Walkabout. Its a great film, but there is plenty of nudity.
