John deserves better scripts (this seems from Supernatural), but it works fine (like Supernatural:D).

some of his crime movies are unavoidable for the genre, especially Crime Story (one of the best with jackie chan), True Colors and Organized Crime & Triad Bureau.

outstanding director. his "early ages" are underrated: the big heat, executioners, the barefooted kid (wonderful!), loving you, a moment of romance 3 and mad monk are good movies. and his producer/deus ex machina career is outstanding too (see expect the unexpected, the odd one dies, beyond hypotermia, intruder...)
