Update: Feel exactly the same after a 2nd viewing.
A great try and worth watching, but ultimately didn't work for me most of the time. If you're interested in it, it's worth checking out because it has some excellent moments and good ideas. Overall it's only a 3 or 3.5 for me though (out of 5).
Absolutely in love with this film & perplexed by the overwhelming hate towards it. Everything about it blew me away, and I can't wait to see it again. Haven't felt such affection for a character in awhile...Von Sydow and Horn give amazing performances. The film feels so natural, raw and honest. I'm not a sucker for schmaltzy films, this really knocked it out of the park for me. Saw 180 films in 2011, this is top 10
Outstanding. SEE THIS at the IFC Center if you can! 3D is a must
This film has a lot of problems, ESPECIALLY in the ending, however the honesty shines through strongly. This probably deserves a 3, but I give it a 4 because of it's genuine heart.
Don't bother with this. The concept and the characters don't work together. Probably the worst in competition Sundance drama I've seen (and to be fair it was decent...just bad for Sundance)
Wow, this one fell through the cracks...excellent film that knows exactly when to be reserved and when to explode. Here's a film I'd throw into the mix of all this best first feature talk. Wow. Mario Bello and Michael Sheen are excellent, so is the cinematography, the editing, everything really (including Kyle Gallner's few moments on screen).
This film is not exploitative. Was Shakespeare exploitative? It's a tragedy, not a realist drama. Precious is a beautiful film that addresses important American problems that transcend race or situation. It's about our value as individuals in a vast world. This film poignantly stands up and says, you are Precious, and you deserve to be loved, no matter who you are or where you come from.
This film is loaded with problem but there are some wonderful quiet moments, with shots I will not soon forget. Glad Fox Searchlight released this, so much respect for them.
This film was sadly buried & no one seems to have seen it this year. Certainly flawed, but this is a very good film with some tremendously beautiful moments. The scene when Ellen Barkin lays in the grass under the tree, the mothers' wedding speeches, and the ensuing wedding montage were all wonderful. A well deserving B+. I LOVE SUNDANCE (the reason I watched it).
Phenomenal film, extremely well composed. The pacing was pitch perfect. The main actress does a great job too! I'm so excited about this film, a nice break from the epic'ness of holiday season films
Excellent! You can watch it on youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCgPw3OrV0I
Moments of this are laugh out loud hilarious, which I think is intentional. I'm with Ebert on this one. What an absurd and fascinating film. I don't even know what to say, this will require multiple viewings to unpack.
There were 3 films I saw this year that were at times a love letter to the 20s and 30s. All 3, Midnight in Paris, The Artist, & Hugo, were very good films. However, one of them stood far above the other two for me, Hugo. This film is not just a love letter to early cinema and film preservation, but a love letter to things forgotten. Sometimes that's an old film, but more importantly it's a lost idea or a lost love.
The more I think about this film, the more I realize it's a masterpiece. I wasn't a big fan of it the first time...now that I've seen it 3 times it blows me away. The fractured narrative conveys this sense of paralysis, that you can't escape certain inevitabilities in life. I think the complex narrative works better here than in Amores Perros & Babel, both rhythmically and intellectually
STUNNING and compelling documentary. I LOVED this. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in sports. The cinematography is beautiful many times, and Hoffman is a fascinating individual.
Loved this, and love the podcast (www.thetobolowskyfiles.com). Also loved seeing The Tobolowsky Files Live in Boston! Not perfect, but very fascinating and often times poignant stories. Stephen has quite the life.
Found myself very disappointed in this one, perhaps because of all the buzz. It felt very artificial to me. Hawaii and the music were both quite beautiful, but otherwise I wasn't a big fan.
Just saw this for (approx) the 8th time. Each viewing I'm amazing by how many new things I discover. This one is a masterpiece in my eyes, easily Aronofsky best (and his others are excellent).
Cinematography was beautiful but I thought there were huge issues in editing and writing. It felt absurdly rushed and important things were just ignored. Very disappointed in this one.
This was AWESOME. Really fun, definitely for people in my demographic (college kids who would see a self-referential muppet movie). It's silly but not stupid, heartfelt without being artificial. A solid 4/5. Loaded with great cameos which I won't mention. ALSO they showed a toy story short (which will show in normal screenings upon release) which was a good 4/5 as well.
Hilarious and awesome!
Excellent loved this. It's definitely overly obvious at points as others have pointed out, but I still found it to be very effective. It feels VERY real and that's where it's most effective. You feel like you're watching a behind the scenes documentary (not that it's shot in a documentary fashion...it just feels REAL). One of my favorite foreign films this year.
Blown away by this film. Visually compelling, I couldn't look away. I'm imagining how amazing it must've been to see this film randomly at Sundance on one of those big screens. I unfortunately watched on a computer. If possible, see this on a big screen.
SO FREAKING AWESOME.
People on this wall are pretty violent about this one... I do find the film overrated but not bad or manipulative. In terms of visuals I wasn't that affected by the way he portrayed many of the scenes, it was too focused on being grand to look at the details. Full disclosure: I've been to Yad Vashem in Israel, the Holocaust museum in DC and learned about it year after year in Hebrew school & normal school.
Don't agree w the general feeling that Ides is typical and not timely. This film speaks to the way politics have changed over the years. Previous major public figures like FDR and MLK were shown more positively by the media (wheelchair & womanizing respectively), however now we go after public figures like sharks. (SPOILERS) if the media wasn't going to attack Morris abt Molly, he wouldn't have to make a dirty deal
I wish I loved it as much as the Sundance programmers and IMDBEN. I simply wasn't so taken by the "characters" unfortunately. There is SO MUCH potential for an amazing 9/11 doc, so I'm more disappointed than critical. I watched a compilation of news reports from when the South Tower fell after this finished, and that was more powerful, meaningful and poetic for me. My viewing experience was hampered by expectations.
The visual poetry is tremendous, as is the sound (score & general sound design/use of sound)
Pretty good. If you love football(/soccer) or even sports, this may be interesting. I LOVE the beautiful game, so it's always exciting to see the game in surprising situations. Quality wise this is a 3/5, however for me, a football LOVER, it's a 4.
This is free on SnagFilms. I think I'm going to watch it today/this weekend.
