Time has weathered its look but its charm remains. Here is a movie that proves that art & commercialism can exist in unison. It beings a chain of Pixar movies that have become an influence instead of being influenced. Because Lasseter was original, because he was brave enough to voyage into a new mainstream film format (successfully), he brought Toy Story & for that alone, we should be forever grateful.
There are many more imaginative directors but Ozu was certainly one of the most original. No one developed such a style as his & no one gave as many great human insights as he. That's why his work will stand the test of time; even if they appear like conservative works on a changing society.
If there is but one movie that we must save from Takahata, it has to be Grave of the Fireflies because it's a thought-provoking testament to those who couldn't comprehend war, let alone be a part of the war effort.
