allegory??
I get that this movie was an allegory for the current state of horror films, but I could have done without the crappy CGI.
Justin, do us all a favor and stick to singing please!
I don't get it.
Cinephiles like to whack off their own self importance and Scorsese gives the best of these kind of handjobs with Hugo. It's groan inducing, but understandable... I guess.
I was expecting a little more based on all the hype, but still a very impressive film. The soundtrack, in particular, is amazing! I was wondering what an art-house action film would be like, now I know. Take some notes, Michael "Douchebag" Bay!
This or 'The Purple Rose of Cairo', I can’t decide!
It looks like the producers tried to cash in on the success of “It Happened One Night”, but instead failed miserably. The only thing that kept my interest throughout the whole film was the fact they partnered Crawford with her husband (Franchot Tone) and her secret lover at the time (Clark Gable). Must have been pretty awkward on set!
I actually liked this one more than Brief Encounter simply because of Claude Rains....his performance in the last 10 minutes is really the highpoint of the film.
The many ways in which Betsy Drake tries to nab Cary Grant is awfully entertaining and inventive. It makes you wonder if she used some of those same tricks to land him in real life.
Short, yet very effective!...It's pretty amazing how much story is packed into little over an hour. I read somewhere that this was Dvorak's finest performance...if it's not, then I'm definitely interested in seeing more of her work. She gave a very realistic turn as a woman fallen from grace and boy, what a shocking finale that was! This film is a forgotten gem and one of my favorites from pre-Code Hollywood.
If you're thinking about watching this for Flynn, don’t even bother….he’s in the film for like 15 seconds and has no lines!
Crawford’s most underrated film by far! This is the picture that was considered such a flop at the time that Joan was labeled "Box Office Poison". I couldn’t disagree more with those critics, I thought she gave a superb performance and she had such great on-screen chemistry with her former husband, Franchot Tone. The real reason it bombed, was because people were tired of seeing her in the 'rags to riches' roles.
Next to Mildred Pierce, this is probably one of Crawford’s best performances. It’s definitely the most complex role ever given to her and she plays it brilliantly.
What a train wreck this film was! I can’t believe the great Howard Hawks could churn out such rubbish….and with all that star power…Crawford, Cooper, Tone, and Young? Such a shameful waste of talent!
The implausibility and absurdity of the finale seems to completely obliterate any prior positives the film had going for it. I don’t think my opinion of a film has ever changed as quickly as it did with "Berserk". I went from ‘pleasantly surprised’ in the first 93 mins to ‘so ridiculous, it’s funny’ in the last 3 mins. Not recommended unless you're a huge Crawford fan.
Did she really say that quote? If she did, that's awesome!
She is/was adorable with that special voice of hers and great at doing the comedic roles. Absolutely loved her in "Every Girl Should Be Married" and "Pretty Baby"! So much more than just a "Mrs. Cary Grant"!
One of the most hypnotic and fascinating movie watching experiences I've ever been privileged to see. I know it's long, but stick with it and you will be rewarded in the end!
The best film about farts EVER!!!
Joan Crawford may be past her prime, but she sort of steals the show here. Brian Aherne is hilariously naughty and is a sexual harassment lawsuit waiting to happen. Yes, the film’s a little predictable and may resemble a soap-opera, but for the most part, it was very enjoyable to watch. Kind of a guilty pleasure type film for me.
Here you have another example of a promising idea gone to waste. The film was amusing at times, but the writers didn't do a very good job of developing the characters and as a result, what happens to them has very little emotional significance. Apart from getting to marvel at the stunningly beautiful Linda Darnell, you're left with a hokey film of little substance. Bottom line: It could have been much better!
I think they took a great premise and made an incredibly flawed film. First of all, the acting by Cooper was atrocious. He was way too stiff and completely miscast for a film as otherworldly and ethereal as this one. I also thought there were issues with the screenplay and direction which made the film feel slightly "clunky" at times. I really don’t understand why this movie is held in such high regard.
The scene with the birds and the butler was hilarious. Other than that, the film's got little going for it.
This is a truly great coming of age film that effectively draws the audience in and makes them care for everyone in it. Kudos to Peggy Ann Garner, who gives one of the most credible child performances in recent memory and to Kazan who made his directorial debut with this film.
The most underrated and overlooked film in Newman's long, successful career!
Very poignant and touching film, especially the ending. This is Natalie Wood's best film as well as performance.
Winslet and Wood's performances paled in comparison to Crawford's and Blyth's. The only one who truly impressed me was Guy Pearce as Monty Beragon...that was pitch perfect casting right there! Nice try Mr. Haynes, but I'll take the 1940's film version any day over this drawn out, pretentious bore of a mini-series.
Pygmalion is the better movie...same story, less filler.
Brilliant film! Right up there with De Sica's best!
the most underrated film of the 60's in my opinion!
How about that ending?!?...the feminists will love that one!
Yeah, I was so jazzed for the first half - I thought it was going to be a feminist movie. But I'm only a woman; what do I know?
