Wow, I’m so glad I happened on to this forum. I certainly have no graphic design talent or resources, but I am exceedingly impressed with all the work done here.
I would like to make some requests, although most of my dream covers have been done and done well. I think my favorite cover out of the whole thread is The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, although it might just be because that’s how I got to this forum in the first place. I was google searching Fassbinder posters, which other than the famous Warhol Querelle poster seem shockingly scarce. I agree with whoever said that Berlin Alexanderplatz is probably the best Criterion cover of all. So in terms of requests, I would love to obviously see a Querelle cover.
Also, I think Martha would be interesting, considering it’s one of his best but least aesthetically pleasing. Actually, Fassbinder would be a pretty interesting challenge candidate.
I would like to see more Altman, as well. I know that there were a few for McCabe & Mrs. Miller and I think only one for Nashville, but I think those are ripe for multiple interpretations. I was disappointed that no one followed up on someone’s request to do The Long Goodbye.
Kiarostami might be cool, too. I like the Taste of Cherry cover, but The Wind Will Carry Us and Close-Up both deserve releases and great covers.
Oh and major kudos to the first I’m Not There cover. How about one for Far from Heaven? That could be gorgeous.
As a last challenge suggestion (though I think some of the random postings have maybe been a version of this) I’d love to see you guys’ best reinterpretations of your least favorite Criterion covers. A few mediocre ones come to mind for me like Band of Outsiders or Andrei Rublev. I’m sure you graphic designers have many more.
Wow, that really was a fantastic Videodrome. And that was another of the covers I’ve never been impressed with, along with Dead Ringers. Which got me to remember that most of the ones I don’t like are actually out of print and have been as long as I’ve been collecting, like the pretty early ones…Silence of the Lambs, both Paul Morrisseys, and especially The Unbearable Lightness of Being (which is actually one of the only non-Criterion DVDs that I quite like the packaging for). Although in the same vein, I also have never been a fan of either Walkabout or Picnic at Hanging Rock’s covers, especially when both are so visually striking. Obviously, the graphic design has improved vastly as Criterion has evolved (although I still miss the second version of the Criterion logo).
