hey , do u think of 'that obscure object of desire' as doing something like 'taking the piss' out of the fernando rey character (in the same way as bunuel's [other] satires of the bourgeoisie) like he is relentlessly trying to 'exploit' this girl (via her being an entirely sexual object to him) but his plans keep getting foiled to humorous effect OR (and of course there are other interpretations that i'm not smart enough to think about but i want to know which of the two that struck me you agree w/ more) like bunuel actually relates to rey's character and is like "dang h8 when the girlz play hard 2 get" b/ i feel like in a lot of surrealist stuff (like nadja by andre breton for example) turns female characters into "obscure objects of desire" mystification from a male perspective which denies them autonomy (and i feel like conchita's being played by two different actresses is a clear [intentional or otherwise] expression of the surrealist denial of female autonomy) ? i was talking to a person abt this and wanted to present this to you b/ from reading your writing on the 'hysterical in a floral dress' list you are a lot more knowledgeable about this type of thing than i am. ty
Hello, the points you make are all valid and if you had the right art history professor you would know that the surrealism movement was especially misogynist. You can pull many scenes together and say this is how I put my theory together. So I agree with what you said to a certain extent but I haven't seen the film in a while and never psychoanalyzed it as much as you have. What I see from the character of Conchita is that these things you mention lend to the humor of her character as an "obscure object of desire", so both perspectives exist.
