Van Sant reaches a profound level of truth simply by observing characters in potentially banal situations and refraining from making obvious judgments. The results here are not nearly as powerful as in Elephant, but more interesting than in Gerry. Michael Pitt is fantastic in an almost wordless role. About halfway through, I was worried the film would make the mistake of not giving the audience any music to understand Blake or his appeal. I'm glad that wasn't the case.
