The film of Alberto Manguel's dreams. As a bibliophile and a patron of the Carnegie Library system, I wasn't expecting to experience such heavy defamiliarization. Lo and behold: Resnais shoots the Bibliotheque Nationale like the interior of a spaceship. He does for a labyrinth of sagging shelves what Herzog did for Kuwaiti oil fires. Wonder if a young Raul Ruiz was watching?
