I felt the EXACT same way about the film as well as during that truly unexpected moment It wasn't a horror film or anything but the slow yet fascinating build leading up to the denouement definitely helped in making me genuinely gasp and not in a cheap, gimmicky sort of way; the suspense was masterful and I even had a strong sense that something earth shattering (no pun intended) was about to transpire, but it was still a hell of a shock. And of course, we'd be selling the film short if we did not mention the strong contrasts yet disturbing similarities regarding how both Anais and Elena approached their sexual fantasies (the central theme of the film). I too remember the Ontario ban very well. A close friend of mine was studying film and media in Toronto at the time and his professor screened Fat Girl for their class in December of 2001 and my friend even got on CBC with his prof, counter attacking the controversial censorship of the film. Of course, he raved about it to me, so my already high anticipation went off the charts and it wasn't until 2004 when A Ma Soeur showed up on the Showcase Revue that I finally viewed the film (I unfortunately did not make the trek to Quebec to catch it in the theatres...although I probably should have). Then, just like Anais, it was over with and I was strangely satisfied.
