About Howard Hawks
The consummate Hollywood director, who would have probably laughed at the French critics labeling him an "auteur". Less a stylist than a craftsman, nevertheless, he made some great films: "Bringing Up Baby" and "Ball of Fire" are the ultimate screwball comedies, "The Big Sleep" is the definition of film noir, "Only Angels Have Wings" is a wonderful adventure-romance, "Red River" is among the best westerns ever made, and "The Thing from Another World" is a perfect example of the 1950s sci-fi monster movie.
